We are extremely pleased with the way that this site has developed over the last year, and hope that it will continue to grow as an effective tool.

Between Domain costs and administrative expenses, DAP costs about $600 per year.

I am exploring ways to fund those expenses, and I would like to get feed-back from those who use it.

We can sell advertisement. Those can be in different forms, such as flashing color splotches in the middle of the front page, or as click-able links in a designated Forum. Each example has a corresponding associated value.

We can create a membership fee, which can be self defeating as those who don’t want to pay won’t use DAP.

It has also been suggested that we have a fund drive like public radio.

There already is a donate button at the left of the header on the front page, and we have gotten several donations, but the total is less than $50 since Dec 2007.

I would love to get feed-back and suggestions, either here, or by PM.

Thanks so much for all you have done to build this site into a valuable resource. Carl

    Carl,

I would resubmit my thought about publishing some of the more informative and constructive threads on this great board in any of the Draft Animal Pubs that would pay a small fee for them, similar to the fees they pay for an article submitted.

A normal article (say two pages of text) can pay about $125.00 so if you put one in each quarter or possibly even more often for a magazine that published bi-monthly – that could generate $500.00 which would help with the cost of DAP site.

One thing for sure is that this site is a public service to the community of interest in Draft Animal Power and should be supported by that same community if possible.

However as we experience operating a 501c3 non-profit serving the public good through a small community of interest (numbers wise) there is not allot of extra money available from that community. I am sure you experience this personally being truly a member of this community and living the sustainable lifestyle you and your family do.

So that is just a suggestion. I invite the use of anything I contribute to DAP being used to support the site through the printed media.

I am not sure how one could collect data about how many readers of the printed media don’t have computers to access this site, but I suspect there are more out there than one would think. Many people don’t have a computer for all sorts of reasons, but they would like to read the discussions on this forum. Most of the print media is hungry for articles and information so maybe there is a match there.

If just collecting random threads from a public forum doesn’t seem appropriate maybe you could conduct online interviews with individuals that frequently contribute to this site in such a way that the responses are not a matter of public forum and then offer them to the printed media as “first run” words on the issues of this community of interest. I would gladly participate in such a
discussion group in support of this site.

I can’t respond to this question without expressing a sincere appreciation for what you and Lisa have done with your wonderful event in the northeast and the creation of this site to be available to the world. This small effort is a great one and enjoyed by many folks at all sorts of levels. One amazing thing is that this is an unedited site that for the most part has been very civil and
constructive in the development of the culture of animal power in the modern world. From your position as host – this is a brave expedition into the unknown every day you click on DAP. Your bravery and determination is to the benefit of everyone to the degree they understand the culture of modern Draft Animal Power.

We at Healing Harvest Forest Foundation thank you for your efforts, they are instructive, educational and inspirational. Hopefully you can figure out a way to keep it going without flashing ads, or the typical distractive aspects of the internet.

It is a refreshing site in that regard and hopefully it will continue to grow to serve as a path on the information highway that has animal tracks along the way. If there are any droppings along the way some enterprising farmer has appropriately scooped them up and added them to the compost pile of
    thought….

    Thanks Carl and Lisa.

    Warm Salute,

What about selling advertising in the form of banner links at the top of the page? It doesn’t have to be intrusive. Draft animal buisnesses like equipment dealers, harness shops, etc can be approached. They’d likely be interested since the advertising would go directly to their target audience and only their target audience. Very little waste of resources.

Carl, Lisa and all, I suggest a yearly or twice yearly fundraiser. Just like Public Radio, be annoying to your users two weeks out of the year. I think the week or two following the NEAPFD, whenever someone signs onto the forum, they should be redirected to the donation page…until they pay up…whatever the forum is worth to them. I’m guilty….mostly because I am not reminded regularly that the forum costs money to run…and that I need to contribute. Weak excuse, but it is a fact of life…folks will do what is easiest. I certainly do not mind contributing….I just need a nudge here and there. I’ll bet your webmaster knows how to make that happen. Jennifer.

I think Jennifer is on to something. The reminder thing. Maybe a twice yearly email to members, just a gentle nudge. Took me a while this summer to send a little and then only because it hit me that something was needed. Most days I’m not thinking that way. This is much too much a valuable place for us all to communicate.

I am in favor of any idea that keeps the site available to any, at no cost. I like Jason’s idea of printing some of it – I am afraid it requires a new layer of effort in order to fund our ongoing conversation. Feel free to print my words if it helps. I like the idea of a linked page of advertising. Unlike most advertising, the SFJ chooses which ads fits its overall message. That makes those ads incredibly useful. Which of us hasn’t picked up an SFJ to find BW Mcnair or I&J Machine. It was fun getting together with other Dappers this weekend at NEAPFD. Donn

I like the ideas about printing material, and selling ad space, but both of those ideas require additional time on my part, which ads cost too. So I will be exploring those avenues as we move forward, I also will extend the opportunity to users to fund this site through donations. Thanks for the feed-back, and keep it coming. Carl

Carl, probably a dumb question but is there a mailing address posted here somewhere? Also would it be okay to send a check rather than donating online?

No mailing list available here, only individuals who post their addresses on the member profile list.

Please feel free to mail checks payable to Carl Russell and Lisa McCrory, NEAPFD, or Earthwise Farm & Forest, at 341 MacIntosh Hill Rd., Randolph, VT 05060.

    Thank you very much, Carl

i follow another online forum about keeping a family cow… it is hosted by Proboards and they have adds that are not very obtrusive. i have even found a few interesting items for sale!
but the idea of contributing as we can afford is also good. “from each according to his ability; to each according to his need.” i am willing to pledge!

This is a serious issue and needs to be dealt with effectively. Some time back when I was raising Dexter cattle I was using a Bulletin board dedicated to Dexter cattle. This board was very popular with the Dexter crowd and eventually contained vast amounts of valuable dialog and information about raising Dexters. As the board grew, it was quite large, the person who ran it appealed a number of times for financial support also trying advertisements, donations, ultimatums and subscriptions. It was suggested by yours truly that the site be turned over to the Dexter Cattle Association for safe keeping and operation but he just shut it down with out notice and wiped it from his hard drive. Ouch. It was a treasure chest of information and was tossed out and lost forever. Better than any book about Dexters than any single author could create.

This site is getting to be of the same value and needs to be secured and made sustainable at least. Carl and Lisa I am sure have poured many hours and dollars into this endeavor and need to be under girded in order that they don’t burn out on this as they carry the load for us all.

Is a Draft Animal and Sustainable Farming organization possible answer? Such an entity could have membership with dues, fund raising responsibility and oversight of the web presence as well as in development of the existing and potentially new programs and events. The web site could remain free as a service of the organization but the work load could be spread out more among the members. Many hands make light work and also mean resources to grow in effect and program beyond the energy and time available for individual operators. Something to think about.

One temporary suggestion which will not solve the problem but can help a little. I have had great success using the buy and sell category and would not think it an imposition to pay a listing fee for the use of such a targeted audience.

These are excellent suggestions and I’m glad you are open to the discussion. The fact of the matter is that a site like this could, in the best of circumstances be seen as an educational and outreach expense for an organization with more secure funding mechanisms. Right now NEAPFD is only a sole proprietorship (Lisa & I), and truthfully the expense here doesn’t justify itself financially.

There are several good and reasonable affordable ways to start to gain more financial support. I like the idea of having a charge for non-obtrusive advertisement, but the value may not be high, and there is the behind the scenes logistical effort (cost), that I don’t want to do right now. As valuable as this site is, it doesn’t help me get taters dug, or wood in, and I want to keep management time on this site to a minimum.

My appeal right now is just to let you all know what the costs appear to be after our first year. I really didn’t start this as another business enterprise. I don’t even want to run it like a business.

I see it more as a club house. Lisa and I have provided the structure, now we need some amenities. Some one has some old storm windows, a screen door, a couple of couches, a wood stove, someone already sprung for a new roof (Thank You, Jenn), some may bring cool-aid and cookies, others, only warm smiles and good stories. I do not want to limit membership, nor do I want to put up a neon sign, just a few posters for eye candy.

I will continue to explore ways to set up value associated with some of the resources we have created here. I am truly pleased with what we all have made this site into. Lisa and I are extremely proud to be part of a facility like this that has the potential to manifest the network we all depend on, and we don’t feel put upon, or unfairly overworked, but if we don’t level with you all now, it could get out of hand.

    Thanks for your consideration.

I mailed my $20.00 bucks today. Money well spent given the hard earned dollar that we generate in the woods daily, practicing restorative forestry and the fact that each dollar seems to be worth less every day and this site is a bargain.

We are a small, often isolated community of interest. I think we need each other more than we know and are all more alike than different.

Hope you can keep it all going Carl and Lisa.

Hopefully a few others will send along a little money for the webmaster services also.

As a proponent of naturally based equine nutrition, I frequently talk with folks about the differences between value and cost. You can spend money on fixing problems, but the real fix is understanding what is truly valuable….which may cost more up front…but saves money in the long run.

I have spent thousands of dollars on horsemanship clinics, lessons and camps over the years and have been rewarded with a good understanding of horses and their way of communicating. But my point is this…I have learned many valuable lessons right here on this forum….for ‘free’. I have no problem contributing to a community that gives sooo much back. It is a pleasure and to be honest….a bargain! I am totally getting my money’s worth and more.

So, for all those ‘lurking’, who lets be honest, are benefiting from others and me putting my greeness out there for critique…put it out there! This is the green, draft power public radio! Pay up…even if its a buck or two. Jennifer.

I was writing a check out for the dreaded Farm Bureau, and decided that even though I lived through the dentist appointment and so forth, I could fork a little more out for DAP. At the moment it is the only stable connection that I have with where I would like to be. At anytime of the day while I am in the concrete jungle or the south FL RV I can escape to the conversations of real people with real problems. It is just like my public radio station that streams live online. At any time I can tune into WAMC or DAP and feel like I am where I would rather be. So anything that contributes to keeping my sanity while saving start-up capital is a blessing and deserves the votes out of my back pocket.

I know how much effort Carl, Lisa and their children put into this site and the NEAPFD. They together have successfully plowed the first long furrow of creating a wonderful educational event, but how much more can a good team work without out burning out towards such a big goal. Is it fair to them that they shoulder the burden alone much longer? As stated before many hands make light work, so why don’t we help add another team and start the next furrow with four up, or better yet lets put eight together and see how much progress we can make with two bottoms.

I sponsored, I volunteered and I donated again, I am happy that I am not alone, but it still feels like there is more that I/we can do to help see that what has been started will continue to run its course well and smoothly. It’s not that Carl and Lisa can’t do this, because we know that they can and that they have. However there are enough of us able minded and bodied folks out there that they shouldn’t have to do so much of the work, and so that they can have more time for their farm and family.

It is hard to take more time and effort out of our already stretched schedules, but if we want this bad enough I know we can stop talking about it long enough to do something about it, if Carl and Lisa can, I know we can too.

    Erika
