Hello all,
We are happy to be part of this group as an opportunity to learn and share our interests in working and riding horses as well as sustainable living . I read the posts from John and Sally . I really feel for John and remember being that angry as well as frustrated in the past, but like an ex smoker who feels for the one struggling to quit. For many years there have been and still are folks who say they support all your hard efforts but the realitiy is they go buy the conveinient stuff or “marketed” stuff in stores. Some of the best savings you can have on the farm is to grow your own BUT that does not pay the mortgage nor provide for expenses .Trying to REACH and Educate the consumer is a real challenge .Which is why we only offer working CSA’s(and have no one signing up! ) A freindly sweet your farmer stopped in to chat one year and said ” I would be glad to switch to organic but can find no help .” No one is willing to pay the cost of the help either on a small operation. When my son got older and I lost his free help, I found I just could not do all the work alone . Of course one person’s small and another person’s small are two different things . My sister thinks that her 350 acre organic farm is a small farm and I think that my 5 acre place is small .
We got a copy of “What a way to go” after the Feild days and tried to show it to our local folks interested in CSA . They found it hard to view weren’t ready for it ,really .
I personally have been working in that direction since I left the farm at 18 and now I am 60 ,but most folks don’t live like us and sure can’t relate! Finding the peace within yourself as well as a way to make it all work with whatever skills and talents you have ,is the key to it all ,I think. Wendal berry said that the farmers of the future would mostly farm part time and work off the farm as well . Well -Carl you asked for feedback !
My husband, KC and I are both farm raised and have raised 3 kids at our small, 5 acre homestead in southern Delaware where we are working toward training our team that we raised to work and ride as well as save seeds and become more sustainable. :)SharonDecember 16, 2007 at 4:43 am #44925Carl RussellModeratorSharon & KC, I was just thinking about you folks today, wondering if you had found the site yet, and here you are.
