Just reading over some old posts and Eric mentioned rats as a drawback of storing grains. Fed up with rats, I visited my vet hoping to adopt a cadre of cats. When she heard rats, not mice, were my problem, she suggested a Jack Russell Terrier.
We ended up purchasing a Jack Russell from New York who descended from a long line of ratters. At 10 lbs, she packs a punch and has virtually eliminated our rat problem. She has also fit in well with our 2 Border Collies and 1 Great Pyrenees – all with their vital place on our farm. As an added bonus, she is a great dog and wonderful with my 2 children.

She is 9 lbs, not much smaller then your JRT. If I get another bunch of rats I will put her out there. She would have a blast killing them. She is a runner however, it would be difficult keeping her just in the barn.

She took them without injury. Jean, if your dog is keen on mice, etc., she should have no problem with problem with their bigger kin.

Don’t be so sure. Most terriers have years of breeding behind them which has intensified the killing instinct. Anything which is within their reach is fair game. They’re very difficult to train to do anything. It’s mostly instinct, and that doesn’t differentiate between an unwanted rat and a valuable laying hen.
