I am seeking a Horse/Animal Powered Logging Apprenticeship for this upcoming Winter, the particular time frame being early January through late April. I would like to stay in the Northeast (Eastern NY/CT/MA/VT/NH/ME). I have been working with draft horses in a market garden situation since March and would like to expand my skills and experience other types of work and teamstering. I am seeking not simply a how-to, but a full rounded experience involving the care of forested land using draft animals. Any suggestions, contacts, or other information regarding folks who take on apprentices is much appreciated.

The landowner on this job requires that any employee of a logging crew has coverage. In NH an apprentice is counted as an employee.
Since it would cost me at least $3000 to cover an employee, I work alone.
If you are self-insured or know of any other legitimate ways around this barrier, I will be glad to work something out. The job is in Wentworth Location in northern NH. It will be a selective harvest of spruce/fir. There is an off-grid cabin to stay in.

Wow – you are a lucky fellow to have such master’s offer to help you. Any cost
to you will be the best investment in your own education you could possibly make. Go for it.Most areas of the country don’t have such resource individuals to go to…
Congrats on finding DAP to network through…

I am also looking for such an apprenticeship, within the identical time period, actually. I am a full-time farm apprentice on an intensive vegetable farm near Harrisonburg, VA. I do not have experience with draft animals, but animal husbandry and forestry/agroforestry are the direction I want my training to take. I would love to work in the NE but am equally happy to be in the mid-Atlantic and am generally flexible on this count.
Thanks for any information, for doing this work, and passing it on.
