Here is Brody with his harness on for the first time ( his new harness that is , not the first time ever in harness ) . I have a shop down in Augusta Wi make them for me. I had them make it with a little wider belly band with some padding on it and insted of chains I had them put pinery hooks on insted of normal heel chains. affter a few adjustment it fits him real well.
A frind of mine took some pics of him pulling logs, I will try and get some of them to put up in the next week . I have also added some pics of him just standing. Taylor Johnson

NeilSeptember 21, 2008 at 7:42 pm #47394TaylorJohnsonParticipantI do have a pad for that collar but it is not as big as that pic makes it look, in fact until he slims down a bit the pad makes it to tight. Looking at that pic it sure looks big though. Taylor Johnson
September 23, 2008 at 11:15 pm #47395TaylorJohnsonParticipantThe harness had been on that horse about 2 minutes at the point of this pic. there were a lot of adjustment and tweaking that went on. I had to make some more holes in the bottom strap and like I said the collar is a little big but not big enough to put a pad in at this point. Don’t worry boys I ain’t going to junk my own horse by working him in a collar that will lay him up, this is all I do this is how I make my living this is all I do. I put this on him to take a quick pic so I could show the man I got him from his new gear, that is it. It seem to me that people get into a pissing contest on here all the time to see who knows the most about horses , training , Tacking up and what not. There is a lot to be learned here for sure and that is why I am here but this is not my first horse and I do know how to fit a collar and I will keep my horses best interest in mind. There are times when every thing is not perfect for me or om horses. One spring I worked for a week with a collar that was to big and holes in my boots you could stick 2 fingers in so I guess you can say we both had poor gear but we survived and bought knew stuff once we had a few checks coming in. I am not a parade man I don’t do any seminars but I do log with my horses about 6 days a week . I am the fifth generation of person to make a living with horses in my family . I have spent a lot of time and money to travel and learn what I can when ever I can about horses and dogs. So if you want to critique the pic I guess you can but you are going on a couple of pics of some gear that has been on a horse for a matter of minutes. I did not post these pic and say hay boys what do you think of the way this collar fits ain’t it the best , no I did not . I just put the only pics up I had of my horse because i like him and was glad to get a knew harness that is it. Hell we can all set on here and compare who’s dads the toughest and who can run the fastest and jump the farthest , I mean if you really want to wast the time on all of that then lets do it because that is about as much meaning a lot of the stuff I have read on here amounts to. To many times some one post a comment or what ever and gets nit picked for doing it . Guys I won’t play these games at all so don’t even start with me I am a friendly person but if you want to get into a pissing contest don’t bother I have know time for it at all. Taylor Johnson

Thanks for the comments about feed-back. I think it’s important to remember that while we are trying to help, to not be condescending. I hope that your comments will cause folks to take measure of the impact of their words.Glad to see a fjord that works for a living. Seen a lot of norwegian pasture pets around here.
Take care, Carl

NeilSeptember 26, 2008 at 2:28 pm #47396TaylorJohnsonParticipantNeil,
Look and my first response to your post ( I do have a pad for that collar but it is not as big as that pic makes it look, in fact until he slims down a bit the pad makes it to tight. Looking at that pic it sure looks big though. Taylor Johnson ) . I did not even disagree with you. I explained the collar and its situation. Then some one else told me again that the collar was to big. I could see were it was heading as to the nature of these boards so I tried to head it off. I do not doubt your knowledge as a teamster and I am sure you are a well of knowledge with any thing to do with horses. My response to the first post was very reasonable . So if you don’t want to share your knowledge with me direct then that is your choice and I will take this time right know to thank you for your videos and the info that you share on here , so thanks.
These board are a good tool but they are also what is wrong with the world. every body keeps there distance and there is know real personal conversation ( if there is it take years to develop ) . If we were at an auction or at a landing then the conversations would be much different I suspect. Tone of voice and posture are a big part in communication, these board have none of that. Neil if I were some place were you were talking horses you might not know I was there because I would probably just listen unless I was asked a ? I am not a disrespectful person on any level but I will not put some one on a pedestal . To put some one on a pedestal is not even far to the person. If you ask me something I will answer like I did in my first response. My answers my sound short at times but that is not my motive at all, I might be one of the most polite and quite people you will ever meet, that is what I try to be. As far as people with motives of being condescending and putting people down well It is a poor way to be, if that is not your motive than don’t worry . As far as these Pi$$ing contest that I was referring to well people should be careful who they get into one with because they might just get drowned. Taylor Johnson
PS. Neil thanks again for your videos and the info you share on here, I enjoy them very much. And i cant see the fit on the collars in the video or pics but I am sure they are right on. Take careSeptember 26, 2008 at 11:14 pm #47389IraParticipantHi Taylor, Nice looking horse. When you head down this way let me know and I’ll see about showing you some trees:D
September 28, 2008 at 1:43 am #47397TaylorJohnsonParticipantIRA,
I worked with a couple of friends that were from PA for about a year and a half may be two. They always talked about the Cherry out there , said it was something to see. Years ago when I was a kid my Dad went out there to look at a private job for us to log but nothing ever came of it but a good road trip. They also talked a little about the hunting to manly deer. I was going to take one of them out there to get some of his stuff but another family happend to be comming back this way so I did not have to go. We cut some Cherry down in southern MN when we worked together but it was not much compared to what they we use to. If I ever get out that way I will for sure get in contact with and let you know. NeilOctober 1, 2008 at 12:55 am #47398TaylorJohnsonParticipantYou can!!! do you mean you can see the collars in the vids? Taylor Johnson
October 1, 2008 at 3:41 am #47388js2743Participanttaylor you may tell people off for trying to help you thats your decision. but the collar is to long, it may be just perfect in width but not in length and its not going to shrink length wise. and if any thing that horses neck will shrink tighten up some from working him and your collar will be even bigger on him. every one i ever talked to wants the collar to fit just to where you can get your hand between it and the horses chest for length.
October 1, 2008 at 9:07 am #47387Carl RussellModeratorI think that a good discussion sometimes has to get around a few tough spots, misunderstandings, and frustrations, but it is obvious that Taylor was not looking for the help, no matter how valuable it is.
I think this thread is turning into more of an opportunity to poke at a sore than to really enlighten any body, and would like to see it stop.
If someone with knowledge and pix wants to start a thread about proper collar fitting, that would be great. I think we all could gain from that, without having to use anybody as an example of what not to do.
Thanks to you all for trying to make this work in your own ways, but enough is enough.

October 1, 2008 at 1:35 pm #47399TaylorJohnsonParticipantLike I said in my first post I was not disagreeing with Neil even , it was that at that point a pad would not fit and the way the collar was riding in the pic was a little mis leading . Js2743 That is how the collar fits now with a pad, this week was the first it would fit with a pad. If this collar starts to bother my horse I will not use it. I have seen some pretty rough stuff used in the woods as far as collars , harnesses and what not. I am not one of those guys.
I am not interested in bickering and arguing on here . If Neil of any one else would put up a vid on fitting a collar or different kinds of collars than I am sure I would learn something buy it and once again it would be appreciated . I for sure don’t now every thing in fact in the big scheme of things I know very little. I am just a logger that is it. I have had a lot of mules and some horses and I have found a way to make my living with animals and that is all I care. Once again any vids would be appreciated, in fact Neil if you have any logging vids post those I would like to see them . I am sure there is something to be learned by them to. Carl I did not come on here to start trouble so for what it is worth I apologize to you and any one else on here that I have troubled in any way . I could not see the fit of the collars in the vid that was not a poke at all and I meant it when I said I was sure that they were right on as far as fit goes, not a jab just a comment. Taylor JohnsonOctober 1, 2008 at 2:26 pm #47393Neil DimmockParticipantsorry dude but a fjord just dont do it for me but I guess your right you were not asking for any help or tips, you just wanted to show us your draft pony!
