Hey all, I’m completely thrilled today! As some of you know, I’ve been caring for Andre’s Percheron, Reno after he injured himself last fall. He’s been doing so well, I hitched him up to the forecart today and spread the last of my pasture seed.
It is soooo nice to drive a well-trained horse. I should have started out that way:p. I was so impressed that he actually stops when you say the ‘w’ word and I could actually get out of the cart to attach the spreader without him walking off! That said, he had his moments…alot of energy to start off, alittle snorty at new stuff….but nothing I haven’t experienced ten-fold with Peanut:eek:. He was very responsive and came back to me with very light line pressure. Now that he is ready for some light work, I need to find more jobs to do at my place! Its a great fringe benefit to work with such a nice horse…of course, if he gets too much better, I’ll have to let him go back to work with Andre’:(.

Um, out west here, we tend to call those types of pastures, “roads”. :pApril 6, 2009 at 11:32 am #51454JeanParticipantYou guys look great! What an awesome way to spend a spring day. Maybe you could make Andre an offer?
April 6, 2009 at 12:52 pm #51450Carl RussellModeratorI’m with Robert, I was going to say, I think it’s going to take a lot to get grass growing in that pasture.
I want to take a copy of this picture to the Mascot Sharpening thread in the buyers guide.

Hmmmm…you guys think so?:p

WHAAAT!?? WHAAT? You can’t really be in NH unless you’re spreading de-icer in that picture. 🙂 How come everyone’s through w/ winter ‘cept me? Freakin’ snowed 5 ” on April 2-3. Dang and we still have mud season to go.
What did you over seed with? Grass/legumes?

Now there’s a really great idea! No reason I couldn’t put salt or sand in that baby over the winter…HAH! You gotta love a four season implement:D.

Legumes. This is my first attempt at frost seeding. I’m not convinced it will work, but its cheap enough to give it a try. I’m just seeding the areas that were grazed down quite low last fall, as I think that is the general rule of thumb for seeding this time of year. However, I sort of feel like I’m just feeding the birds and my chickens:rolleyes:.
April 7, 2009 at 2:18 am #51452PlowboyParticipantJen, Be carefull driving Reno too much. If you keep driving a good Percheron you’ll be converted and forget about Peanut. He really needs you to help him with his education before you turn him out and forget about him.:)

No chance of forgetting about Peanut;), but I do think I might look for a second harness…I think Reno could be of some help in Peanut’s education!
April 8, 2009 at 12:59 am #51453PlowboyParticipantJen, He may very well be a good influence on Peanut and as long as the evener is straight they will be a good team no matter if they are the same color or not. Good Luck with it, Dennis
April 8, 2009 at 1:40 am #51459jen judkinsParticipantWell, unfortunately we’ve had a set back today. Reno had a fight with my fence and lost. Severed the extensor tendon on…get this…the injured leg. We are now back to stall rest, IM antibiotics and wound care.
I’m fairly despondant at this point…don’t even try to cheer me up:(
April 8, 2009 at 1:53 am #51464dominiquer60ModeratorI won’t try to cheer you up, but I believe if anyone can overcome this set back, you Jen are the person that will be able to get it done.
Best Wishes,
Erika
April 8, 2009 at 4:58 am #51467Robert MoonShadowParticipantAs I said in my email, my friend: I think it was Reno’s destiny to be injured in such a way as to become unfit for the work that Andre’ intended him for ~ thus, the opportunity opened up for YOU to make permanent that place in your heart that he’s already claimed for himself… which, as you’ve told me, has happened. Congratulations on your new horse, my friend! Very generous of Andre’, and I know that Reno & Peanut will fit together to make the perfect team for you. Reno is still capable of having a long & useful life; just not the level of exertion Andre needs – but just right for you!
…and you had better cheer up ~ Reno’s recovery will depend on his attitude – which, of course will reflect yours. He’s in excellent hands.
Thank you, Andre’, for making my friend’s life a little fuller.April 8, 2009 at 7:24 pm #51455JeanParticipantI wish I lived closer Jen, I would love to help in some way.

April 9, 2009 at 1:34 am #51460jen judkinsParticipantThanks everyone…I’ve got my Mo-Jo back, so to speak and I’m being more optimistic.
The truth is, when I agreed to take Reno on, I made it clear it would be a short term situation. If it didn’t work, I would send him on his way…without any long term commitment. Andre and I even planned Reno’s passing if necessary. The trouble is….Reno has completely stolen my heart. He is a wonderful partner and a beautiful creature, full of life and optimism. Even when he has doubts, he rises to the occasion. Andre warned me that he was special, I just didn’t believe him at first. I do now.
It seems a cruel joke to subject him and me to more ‘rehab’, but I cannot refuse him at this point, though some of you will think me ‘soft’ or worse…’unsustainable’! All I can say is that there is a role for people like me in a communtity like this…we all have our gifts. The world would be a sadder place without love and compassion and the expectation of miracles.
