I have a few suggestions that might strengthen the educational component of this site:
    [

A lending library. There are a lot of dvds and books out there that have been a great resource to me and might be to others as well. I have a few horse related videos (Clinton Anderson’s Round Penning and Logging with Horses, Oxen and Mules) that I would donate if this ever got off the ground. I am a member of the Northeast Border Collie Association that has an extensive library. I believe they charge $4/ per item for 10 days or so to cover shipping.

[*]A DraftAnimalPower video camera. I don’t know how it would be funded, but it sure would be cool to check out ways people are using their horses on YouTube. Tutorials, techniques, equipment use and renovation?!

      Thoughts?

      Hi George,

Robert Moonshadow tried to get something like a “lending library” going back in Feb/Mar w/ no real response from the community. But rather than the group holding the DVDs and books, each member could loan stuff that they have on hand – maybe pay shipping or something. Since interest seemed to be non existant, it ended up that just he and I are exchanging materials right now.

      Good idea(s).

Yeah, I’d have to say that I think it is a great idea as well. I think there is interest in sharing, just hard for any of us to try to figure out how to organize it.

We already have the Books/Resources category that can be a central location. If you want me to create a sub-forum to be titled Lending Library, then I would be glad to do that, and then people can figure out how to make the swaps themselves.

Do you think we should have a category specifically for people to post links to videos?

I like the video catagory kind like a focused u-tube place. I don’t know if thats practical with the present software but it would be nice if so.

I also wish more would post their stills to the photos section.

      Carl:

I think a separate section might be good for the “library”. I don’t think a separate section for the video is needed as people can posts links in their threads. I want a community camera that can be loaned out with a deposit with a prerequisite being a video post of some sort detailing some aspect of animal power. I like the idea of having the art of working draft animals preserved and shared on video, kind of like a modern day mentoring system. The trick is how to make it doable and affordable. I thought this might be a good venue.

I would NEVER loan out any of my items as most people are not responsible enough to return them. I have had the experience before…..never a lender or a borrower be!!!! It took me a long time a acquire these items, plus lots of cash.
I do have several books, videos, magazines, information that I have gathered over the years. I know exactly where it is, when I need it.
Copies of things are a different story. Good luck with this project.

Oh, Robin, I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience. I love to loan out my DVDs and books…..makes me feel like they are useful and not just sitting around on a shelf where I might pick it up once a year. I keep track of where they are with address and phone number and in general have had no issues whatsoever. I even did a round robin mailing of a video some years ago. 12 people in 12 months….no one got skipped over and I got my tape back a year later…well worn. Very satisfying

I like the library idea and would be happy to help if needed. I currently have Ed Thayer’s Les Barden ‘D-ring harness’ video,(thanks, Ed) and I have a pretty big library myself on horsemanship, riding and driving, I would be happy to share. In fact, I believe it to be an obligation within any worthwhile community to share skills, knowledge and services. I think it is just a matter of whether we will consider this forum a ‘worthwhile community’. To me its a no brainer.

Check out the Lending Library forum in the Community of Interest category.
