I have been training my ox team to come to the command “come boss”. I have been doing this when I feed them in the morning as they are usually outside in the exercise paddock adjacent to the barn where the feeding takes place. In addition after reading Howie’s comment about training his bulls to wait for their feed until he tells them it’s alright, I have been working on the same thing with my boys. All this training has been in the same setting and place and I wondered how transferable it would be when I put them out on grass or whether it was site specific knowing how visual oxen are.

Today was the day I tried it as I put them out on pasture for the first time since I got them. They were enjoying the fresh grass tonight when I went down and called them to me with my “come boss” command. They came running up from in the back of the lot to greet me. I left them there for a few minuets and got some grain after which I came back and put down their two small piles on the grass. They stood looking at it from about 5′ away waiting until I said “Ok Boys” and then both stepped up and commenced eating.

Very satisfying and encouraging experience to watch these two gentle giants learn and obey so well.

Photo is of Rock and Roll eating their morning grain ration in the barn.

It’s amazing what they remember! I’ve not trained mine to wait for food, I normally catch them and tie them up and have the food visible, but out of the way until i give it to them so they have to wait in a sense but I think it would be better to do it your way in future!

Way to go, Rod. I wish I had done this when mine were young!
