Hi, I’m happy to find a board dedicated to sustainable farming practices and working with draft animals.
My Name is Sara and our family raises Shires in Oregon.
We currently have 16-head and our farm is about 72 acres. We like to use our horses year-round for plowing, harrowing, spreading manure, mowing, and whatever else we can think of.
I’ve been driving for about 7 years and drive up to 4 currently (though I’m working on 6). I love plowing most of all and Dad and I go to several plowing competitions in the area during the year. We also show during the summer and compete in mostly local county fair and our State Fair. We train horses for clients during the year and also raise one or two foals each year.

i live in central oregon and have a shire that came from the valley somewhere, perhaps he’s one of yours? bob h.August 27, 2009 at 6:23 pm #53902VandParticipantThank you for the welcome Carl, Bob, and Scott.
We have fun with them and it’s definitely a way of life and a passion for us rather than a hobby.
Bob…it’s very possible your horse was one of ours. We sold a horse down to the Salem area recently and before that, hadn’t sold a horse for abotu 6 or 7 years. So if you’ve had your horse for a while, it’s possible he/she came from our farm.
