I Google’d “bobsled plans” and it brough up a couple but I don’t know exactly what type you’re looking for. Get yourself a cup of coffee, slide over to Google and settle in for a day of sorting through the 578,000 results for the one that fits your needs.

Or even better, “Making Double Sleds” by John Rhicard, Winter, 1990, Vol. 14, #1.

Instructional as well as being as great read by a great guy.

    I gotta get to work.

Try to find one at an auction. You can buy a decent one around here for $300 to $500 dollars. There are usually parts at auctions too, where you can rebuild the wood part. If you go to an amish area you can find whatever you need.

I have a great one-horse bobsled with shafts. I could send some photos if that would be helpful.

on a single bob sled, what width should the runners be apart and how long are the cross beam and bunk? finally getting to rebuilding mine, i have all the ash milled out except for the tongue- what are the dimensions of that? I was looking for the dimensions but couldn’t seem to find them anywhere. Thanks alot.

the plans from the small farmers journal shows 38 inches between the runners with the cross beam 15 inches wider . the plans say to adjust the measurments to suit your individual needs .the 15 inches gives you the room to bolt the runners on- 7 1/2 inches on each side. you need 11 foot 6 for your tongue so allow for how ever long will be behind the evener.

    bradley,
sometimes, usually even, on a bobsled, the evener hooks to a hook that turns and runs down under the roll and forward bolting through the base of the pole. your hitch actually wraps around the roll, giving a short strong hitch. your pole only needs to be ten and a half or eleven feet. puts the horses right up under the load. more manuverable, and better draft.

mitch i guess your right on 11 foot , i forgot that i started with 11-6 and ended up cutting 6 inches or better off. but at least i didnt have to go find a tongue stretcher;)
