It definately pays to pay attention when old men speak. To absorb there knowledge and watch there actions will pay you off in the long run. We had our 14th annual silo fill September 12th and 13th. We rebuilt a McCormick binder last winter and also use a good original Mc Cormick and a solid John Deere. When I started binding corn as a kid I knew only how to drive the horses. When it wouldn’t tie or something I just waited for one of the old boys to catch up and get me going. Well now the old boys are either gone, out of business or too old to ride the binder all day. Luckily over the years I have paid attention when the older men spoke and looked over there shoulders when they were trouble shooting. We got through it this year with minor problems on a couple of the binders. Luckily there are still some middle aged guys that know alot and we have the support of our local Amish equipment repair shop for parts and advice in the off season. During the event it’s just me or a couple other teamsters that attend that have worked on them before. If you have a chance to learn about vintage equipment jump at it.
