I recently went to Montgomery Indiana . I spent a week up there at the Draft horse and equipment sale . I was just amazed at the way of life and have become hooked on the big draft horses . I have been studying them on the net and can’t wait to buy a pair . My dad use to work mules quite a bit as a hobby of course but i was never interested . I have quarter horses also and was wanting to know what the first step is to teaching a horse to ground drive ?

Welcome from AZ.
You didn’t say where you were from. You were in my old “stomping ground”. I lived just 25 mile from Montgomery for over 40 years. I have never went to the big sale, but they say it is something to see. They started putting it on after I moved away. I have been back and I have been to the usual Friday sale.

Indiana for a few years before moving to Wyoming, and bred our mares to a stud just down the road from the sale barn; then we ended up selling our mares and colts to them when we moved. Although I grew up with a lot of Amish in SW. Ontario, my dad was a veteriarian, it wasn’t until living in S. Indiana that working draft horses really got into my blood. Or maybe it was always there and I didn’t know it? Either way, I’m hooked now…

I am not sure you remember the UPS driver in that area; Bob Hess, a good friend of mine. Of course he retired some 5-10 years ago, but he knew everyone over there. He run that area for years. I am sure he would have been at your dad’s place if he was there in the same time frame. He was also a AQHA national barrel racing winner in Oklahoma City. Still works with horses locally and sometime Europeons, and travels to Italy to train the Italians with there animals.
Did you ever go to the Raber’s Buggy Shop or Knepp’s Collar Shop? They are a neat visit into the past. I still buy from Knepp’s and have them ship to me.
