I am surprised that we do not have a working oxen association in the New England area with all the 4-h and oxen resources we have in the region. Something modeled along the lines of MODA in Ohio. I know their are some pulling groups but unless I am missing something that already exists I think it would be great to have one where we could have a field day with our animals, speakers, activities and all the other neat stuff that can take place in such a group. May be we could even interface with the DAP field days and have a representation and animals at that gathering.
Any thoughts from you New Englanders and others.October 26, 2009 at 9:58 am #54917mother katherineParticipantRod,
there is an association called New England Ox Teamsters. How active they are, I’m not sure. I’m guessing they’d enjoy new blood with the energy to promote and carry out thses ideas.
Their exact web address is found in the links of New England Ox Supply, among others.

Howie once took me and his 4H club to Brooklyn, CT for Sandy Eggars field day, and it was great. It was for people to practice cart courses and pulling, before the fair season, I believe. Ray Ludwig advised on cart work, one of the top pullers helped in the pulling pit. In the evening we had games, where my friend and I pulled a stoneboat in eliminations, hitched to a 2 x 4, pushing with our hips. Boy, did that give me an understanding of teamwork in the yoke! Robin came, too. Only too bad it was too far to bring our own cattle.
That was quite a long haul for us.

I never dreamed they would be in my paddock. I just love them….more every day…..and they still work at 14 years.
I’ve been back to Brooklyn several times. Everyone always has a good time.
come on out East! You may be able to hitch a ride with Howie.
RobinOctober 29, 2009 at 3:48 pm #54914VickiParticipantRobin, I DO remember that, and almost mentioned it. I was thinking of asking if I could hitch along with Howie to NEAPFD, but the dates were bad for me. Instead went to Tillers the next week and had some valuable experience.
You and Jed and Grey are a great “love” story!
