Well, broke out the team for some fall tilling today. Not because we needed to plow but well, I wanted to! lol First time Dottie was on the plow and first time I’ve ever ran the walking plow. TONS of fun that walking plow!
November 10, 2009 at 12:58 am #55300TBigLugParticipantI turned my team over to Grandpa for a round so he could see what a good team works like! lol j/k Oh yeah, the left hand horse is his. That’s the one I’ve had the speeding problems with.
November 10, 2009 at 12:59 am #55301TBigLugParticipantA couple meeting of the minds pics. We were discussing line lengths and how to get the HOT ROD horse on the left to slow down a little bit. Then it hit me….. plow deeper! lol
November 10, 2009 at 1:03 am #55302TBigLugParticipantWhat you are seeing here is the first time grandpa’s gotten to use his old walking plow in 20 years! He only was able to go a few feet (maybe 50 or 60) but man you should have seen him smile! I was so glad he got to do it for even a short time.
November 10, 2009 at 1:06 am #55303TBigLugParticipantAnd here’s my first time on the walking plow. Heather was awesome as usual. Before grandpa came out Heather was driving the team and I was running the plow while I got used to how it works. Then she ran the camera for the rest of the day. Don’t know what I’d do without her!

November 10, 2009 at 1:30 am #55316VandParticipantI love, love, love plowing with the walking plow. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Beautiful pictures. Sounds like you had a near-perfect day.
I take some of our “kids” plowing every winter and spring. It’s a great way to spend the day.

Hi there TBigLug :Glad to see you and grandpa are having fun behind the plow and working the ground with your team.
One thing you might want to take into consideration for safety’s sake is when you put the check lines
compleatly around your waist there is no quick way to get loose if something breaks loose like the
( Harness parts, evener, or single trees etc. )If for some reason a horse or mule is spooked or stung by a bee and runs you can not get out quick
with the full force of the lines pulling you over the plow. 😮If you look at post # 10 you can see how Carl Russell has one arm free from the binding of the lines
from being compleatly around his body, and if he has to he can slip them off his single arm and head quickly,
but he can still control the horses if need be while plowing.Just something to think about.
Have fun ! ! ! 😀

Incredible ground. I would kill to plow land like that
Flat ground, lots of sand and NO STONES in this field. Oh did I mention as well that it is right behind the house probably 200′ from the barn. We’re super lucky to have good ground here to have fun. This field itself is about 20 acres or so so I’ll have plenty of ground to have fun on until we have to buckle down and get it planted in the spring. Usually we’ll call a few friends and have 6 or 7 teams working out there in the Spring.
Bumpus- I know what you’re saying but it’s one of those, “That’s how my grand dad did it, how his dad did it and how his dad before him did it.” kinda things.
November 10, 2009 at 2:40 pm #55293J-LParticipantThanks for the pictures. I’ve only plowed a little but enjoyed it almost as much as mowing. You do have beautiful gound there and looks to me like you’re doing a great job.
Take advantage of the old timers (I’m sure you already do) and pick their brains for everything you can get. No substitute in the world for all their experience.November 10, 2009 at 3:04 pm #55312lancekParticipantHey Biglug,
Love the 5th pic you look like your on the starting line of a drag race and ready to shift into high gear! And Carl it is hard to find a large platto of ground to plow there in VT:D - AuthorPosts
