mikerock@mhtc.netJune 8, 2010 at 1:07 am #56548jason glickParticipanti now believe carl has cronic progressive lymphadema (cpl). the possibility was just brought to my attention this spring.. the warm wet months are the hardest to deal with the secondary infections associated with CPL.. i’m unable to give him the daily care needed to keep it at bay. he is not lame nor shows any sign of becoming lame.. he is a willing partner in the woods and is capable of moving a lot of wood. if there is someone out there that feels they can take on this task, i would greatly appreciate hearing from them. i purchased him as part of a team two years ago without the knowledge of his condition for $3000 (team w/harnesses) he is well worth the $1000 just for the work he will do as long as the daily care fits into your schedule. i would consider taking nothing for him as long as i could be sure he was taken care of more diligently, respectfully, jason
June 8, 2010 at 2:01 pm #56541Scott GParticipantHow does CPL respond to dry cool mountain air?
June 8, 2010 at 6:55 pm #56542Scott GParticipantI wasn’t that familiar with CPL. Sounds like a chronic condition of pooling of lymph fluid in the distal portion of the limbs, AKA “elephantitis”. Here is a good summary from UC Davis if you’re interested.
June 9, 2010 at 11:33 pm #56549jason glickParticipantyes, thanks scott i saw that discription early this spring. i guess, luckily he isn’t as bad as some of those shots. it is a shame, he’s a good horse.
September 28, 2010 at 8:17 pm #56550jason glickParticipantscott, it sounds like you might get up to NEAPFD this year. i’m planning on bringing carl over, so people can see what he’s like. cooler weather is here and his issues seem to mellow out. when the flies aren’t out.
September 29, 2010 at 12:26 am #56543Scott GParticipantUnfortunately not NEAPFD, Jason, but hopefully MOFGA LIF wkshop in November. Trying to see if I can swing an airline ticket on my end…
October 2, 2010 at 12:06 am #56545jason glickParticipantthat sounds great scott, look forward to seeing you there.. if carl hasn’t moved he’ll be at the LIF workshop as well, almost hometurf.. cheers and see you in nov,, jason
December 16, 2010 at 1:52 am #56551jason glickParticipantcarl our Brabant may be heading out west for dry air and TLC.. i’d love to keep him a bit closer. if anyone knows of someone with the ability/time to care for a horse with CLP ( see earlier post and link for info) please get in touch.. i woud like to keep him around this area ( new england) and leads would be appreciated.. cheers, jason
November 20, 2011 at 11:44 am #56555mwelchParticipantJason, I believe my husband and I just looked at this horse that used to belong to you. They weren’t sure of his age but said he was mid-teens possibly, his name is Carl and he is a red roan Brabant, located in Coopers Mills. Was he diagnosed by a vet with CPL and how long has he had scratches? He still has it pretty bad and he is a little thin. If we can’t take him, we would like to help the people who own him place him in a good home but I was looking for a little more background on him. Thanks
November 20, 2011 at 5:54 pm #56544Jim OstergardParticipantI worked with Carl and Jason on several jobs and I bet that is him because I know he went some where just a bit west of us. He sure wasn’t thin when he left Jason’s. I almost took him as I felt at the time with putting him in the barn each night and working on the scratches we might have been able to control them to some extent. I really liked his looks and the way he worked. Jason is still up at the LIF workshop at MOFGA but I will talk to him tonight and make sure he gets on this thread.
