Hello. My name is Allison and I’m from North Carolina. Looking forward to chatting with you about oxen. I am a dairy farmer that has just started with a set of twin steers (Jersey). They are five monthes old and are in their second yoke size 6″. Doing very well, but I have a lot to learn. I want to start teaching them to pull a stoneboat. I was wondering if anyone has some ideas on building a stoneboat or knows a way to gather stones around the pasture farely easy for these twins?

An easy and inexpensive alternative to a stoneboat is a sled. You just need a couple of 4×4’s and some 2x across the top to form a solid platform. I like them about 3 ft wide and 8 feet long for most general purpose work. Stoneboats are nice but you need to fashion a head out of something or buy one so you may want to start with a sled and look around for stoneboat parts.

Thank you for the idea. I will definently look in to doing just that. With my busy schedule I could use a quicker project. Besides the boys probably won’t mind.
