We’re currently growing 1.5 acres of sweet corn and would like to use our team of horses to cultivate. I’m looking for imput on row widths, time frames and any other considerations I should make.

Traditional tractor pulled corn planters seed at 30″ rows where as in organic farms plant at 40-42″ rows easier to get oxen and horses down. Plus it depends if you use a single horse cultivator with handles or an over the row cultivator. I have used both and for me I like the single horse better cause I can move a bit faster and if I get into the row which you shouldnt but IF you do it only eats one row not two. Maybe the other guys can say if I am right or wrong but this works for me.Jim

In L. Miller’s book, it’s got old charts showing expected times for various chores/implements.

I am not sure where you are located but the University of VT has a wonderful Extension Agent named Heather Darby. She is an agronomist well versed in organic practices in many crops. She may have some good resources to recommend. Heather.Darby@uvm.edu52
