ParticipantHi im Fellman, im from Scotland (Scottish borders) i breed fell ponies and im becoming very interested in using them for light work around our farm so i thought i would join here as i have no knowledge of working ponies in harness and thought you chaps might help me on my way as you all seem very knowledgeable 😀

Hiya Fellman from a fellow newbie and I’m also from Scotland.
The site is great although I’m still finding my way around it, very knowledgable people.
I have Clyde’s and I too want to work them on my farm.

Dont get to much scotch in yer veins Carl it makes you do silly things and gives you a bad head(i know what you mean) Surprising how many Scott’s on here before me hello to you, i breed fell ponies but have a increasing desire to use them for small tasks on the farm just for fun relay I’m going to break a 3 year old to harness very soon , i have never done this before but hey we all have to start somewhere she is very well handled as she has been shown in-hand a lot since she was a foal , im thinking of buying some webbing harness to start with a leather collar the small jobs im thinking of would be a bit of chain harrowing and shifting the odd log or three, what do you think ?? am i off my head ??? ive put my web site in my sig so you can have a look.

I am beginning to think the days of the 18hand draft horse is numbered.. a bit like the big engine. A team of fells will amaze you with the work they can do. Good luck with it… where abouts in the Borders are you BTW.. I have a daughter at Kelso..

Over the last few days we’ve been overrun by Scots here on the board, (okay 2), then Erika starts referencing Braveheart in another thread today. And John, hmmmm, he may have been the first one to “infiltrate” DAP, a sort of mole clearing the way.
So, what will happen next? Please no haggis!:eek:

I don’t know of Fell ponies but it is always surprising at how many different “breeds” or “races” of horse/pony there are in Europe that we don’t hear much about. I recently saw some of the Dartmoor ponies but don’t know much about them either.
Can you describe the fell area from which I assume the name is derived? Is it much like the area in Dartmoor?

I have converted a few Englishmen to this delicacy…. and im sure if you checked back a big percentage of you guys will have Scot or Irish blood somewhere… all the better for that, seeing as we invented…. let me think…. everything:D… boy a DAP get together would be something else wouldnt it !!!!..

The area where fells are native to is cumbria, northumberland & scottish borders its a very hilly area similar to Dartmoor but steeper if you look on my web site in links and go to the fell society web site it tells you everything you would need or want to know about fells , there a fantastic pony they realy are very quiet, clever strong and sure footed also exceptionally tough ponies we have had the hardest winter of a generation 2 feet of snow -24 and our ponies winter out without any feed at 1000 ft above sea level and now in march are getting to fat :eek::eek:

ParticipantAha! I spotted you in the ox section and thought I’d say hello to a fellow UK-er! I’m in Yorkshire – before I got into oxen fells were one of my favourites and certainly a candidate for me to work with, I grew up in East Lancs and spent a lot of time in the dales and lake district fells.
I too think smaller animals are better for my current needs – I started with a very big ox but now I think it would have been better to get two or four smaller ones!

Hi Ixy, nice to know that you know the fell breed and like them, it would be nice to see fell`s in yorkshire ;);) I am considering takeing a fell or 2 to the great yorkshire show i have not been before but it comes highly recomended.
