Has anyone used the wooden hames the Amish use on their work harnesses? I have a pair but they don’t seem to fit the collar just right. Not sure if I should Let the collar change its shape to fit them or just get rid of them. Any suggestions?

Post some pictures if you can. Depending on the style, you might be able to let your top hame string out a bit.

I never used wooden hames before and wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve got it now. I picked up a new collar and two “farm harnesses” (chain tugs) I can’t wait to use them. They should work well skidding logs.

JohnJohn, if the wood is in good condition and they fit your collar well there is no reason why they would not be as good as steel. Just make sure the straps at the top and bottom are in good condition as well and go for it.:)

JohnApril 30, 2011 at 6:28 pm #65721J-LParticipantI was lucky enough to find about six sets of wood hames in an old barn that a fellow was cleaning out and he gave them to me. They had been sitting in there since around 1950 but were still good. I’ve been using them for four or five years now and really like them. Some of the work has been heavy, jolting work and they’ve held up fine. They are nice and light.
