As you are aware we have an issue with CPL and I was wondering if any of you guys that have the same problem have any specific feed rations or feeds that are to be avoided.. I dont feed any sweet feed as the condition seems to get worse with anything mollassesed.. also, more frustratingly, it seems to get worse with exercise:confused:.. I used to have young horses but as I get older I seem to be sticking with what I have and as a result have a few horses over 10 yrs old and this is the age this condition seems to escalate..

this might get the fodder out of the central focus…..March 1, 2011 at 6:37 pm #66121greyParticipantJac – what are the symptoms that your horses are exhibiting?
Charly – I was watching that slideshow (did I do something wrong or is there no audio on the slideshow?) and frame #31 bummed me out because, while the leisions definitely showed improvement, it looked as though the horse was foundering.

March 1, 2011 at 6:57 pm #66123near horseParticipantIn the the CPL thread did you say you felt they WERE getting enough exercise?
I’m thinking that you might be able to justify having a treadmill to give them regular daily work with enough constant motion to get blood flowing well. And maybe get something from the exercise – electricity or what have you.

JohnMarch 1, 2011 at 7:21 pm #66126jacParticipantThe worst one is the bay gelding. he is 15 now. his hind legs have the swellings around the pastern and weep. Sometimes I think it is receeding but then it comes back. the rest have what might be known as mild scratches on your side of the pond. Work seems to make them stamp their feet more but I take your point Geoff on the treadmill idea.. its funny you noticed the foundering because I feel the gelding is starting to flatten out on the front feet in spite of me trying to keep the toe back and the heels down. It really is beginning to be a problem and I am seriously considering gradually changing to black Percheron.. It seems the european Belgians have it bad as well as Clydes and Shires .. thanks for all the imput guys..

Go on down south there and get you some young chesnut geldings. There are plenty and you can’t raise them for what you can buy them for over there either….
We saw plenty of geldings while there. There is a man name Clark near Birmingham that had several candidates. Simon may help you find some over the phone, when he ain’t working 16 hours a day. Hardest working man I know.Jason
