Does anyone know where I can buy a collar for a single ox? I live in Australia and I am willing to pay to have one shipped out.
I am training a single Belted Galloway (the beef variety) X Jersey steer. He coming along nicely and looks like the Galloway, lots of muscle. Here in Australia we call them bullocks instead of oxen so I am a bit inclined to use both names at different times.
I have been training him (Chock) by using a set of old horse hames wrapped in hessian. It has worked very well until now. At 8 1/2 months of age he is starting to outgrow the setup and it works OK when he is only pulling a light load but would not be suitable for a heavy pull. I made a small sledge for him and he has been earning his keep for the last 4 months by carting a couple of bales of hay at a time and carting milk from the dairy to the piggery on a daily basis. We milk two Jersey cows and feed most of the milk (we keep some for ourselves – whole milk, butter, yoghurt and cheese)) to our Berkshire pigs; we are hardly having to buy any grain.

I am guessing that if I get a collar (maybe a three pad collar) for him now it will do for a few months and then I would need at least one more before the collar that he will need when he is fully grown.
    Can anyone help?

Not too long ago I saw an article about someone making three pad cow or ox collars, but now I can’t remember where i saw it! (pathetic)
It might have been in Rural Heritage Magazine and the author/ collar maker MAY have been an American woman named Barb Lee…. I will do some “re-searching” and see what I can find.

I remember the article, it was in RH and written by Barb Lee. Seems like it was at least 5 years ago. It does not show up in a search of the RH back issues so I do not know what is going on with it.

Steve, you will probably have to make your own. Here are some resources:

You might also consider using a single ox yoke. I do. Simpler to construct and quite efficient.

    Hope this helps.

I’m selling mine, but it is for a BIG animal and I’m really not sure a jersey x anything would be big enough!
