at 2.11 -2.30 they show how they bend the horn after having heated the tip with boiling water; any idea how long that takes?

Elke, I don’t know, but if you could find some horns that are no longer attached to their owners you could try it out and practice a bit. I am sure long, thin horns would bend easier than shorter, thicker horns. Good luck with that.

Make sure that you only heat up the tip, do not overheat the live tissue in the horns.

couldn’t help it, but when I saw it I immediately thought of a perm ……

positively, that is also what they do; I imagine besides that, the closer you work on the head the more you risk burning parts you don’t want to

Thanks for the video. I watched it yesterday on broadband. It brought back a lot of memories from my childhood in Maine. Apparently, the video is for sale. I can’t wait to get one; my little stash of ox videos is, indeed, little, but inspiring and comforting in this draft cattle void.

Howie has said that old-timers told of bending longer more mature ox horns by shoving a feshly baked loaf of bread right out of the oven, onto the horn. After the steam softened the shell, it was bent. Sorry, I haven’t seen the video yet–computer slowness.

Hello, we used to use a baked turnip. Who would waste a good loaf of bread? This method is for bending the outer tip of the horn as seen on the Film Board of Canada video that was made here. You don’t want to use too much heat as this may make the horn brittle, not to mention hot.
