With corn prices so high I am looking at planting my own next year, does anyone know of good varieties to grow in the north and where to purchase seed? Any help would be great.

    Thank you

Try Johnny’s Select Seeds johnnyseeds.com or Peaceful Valley Farm Supply groworganic.com to start. Johnny’s has a bi-colored open-pollinated sweet corn. PV has 3 types – including a popcorn variety.

    George:

If you are looking for feed corn, try contacting Jack Lazor from Butterworks Farm in Vermont: http://butterworksfarm.com/jack.html He does a lot with op corn and is a wealth of knowledge.

Shumway has a few varieties as well. We tried Goliath with success last year, nice white ears, I have heard that this variety is closer to the 10% Crude Protein that corn used to be instead of today’s 8%. This year I tried a small plot of Hickory King, beautiful 10 row ears of huge white kernels. I got it in late so I’m not sure that it with mature soon enough to make my 6 ears to save for next year goal, but given the year I am game to try again next year.

12 acres of MN 13, does very well here in MN. Good moisture this year, but we usually get 16 k around and 32-36 k long on a approx 90 day period. I planted last spring on the 10th of May and it matured before it froze hard enough to kill on the 13th of September, majority was in dent by that time.

I bought mine from http://www.openpollinated.com it is wapsie valley. Supposed to be 87 day. I have not harvested any yet but it looks good. It is supposed to do well in poor soil, which I have. I don’t recall the mans name but he is very helpful. When I was shopping around he was by far the cheapest. They have several other varieties also. I have cut some stalks to get the field opened up for the picker and I throw everything in for the cows. They come running whenever they see me with a few stalks in hand.
