New video. I have been breaking new skid trail to the back of the property where access has been limited because of wet ground and wicked multiflora rose. Quite a few hang-ups back there so me and Will and Abe got after them. Looks good for skidding and cutting now.

We attempted our first hangup at the DAPNet Annual Gathering. Just a small tree that fell in the crotch of another. My Abe And Will gave their best and got the butt end a few feet off the ground before it pulled them backwards. A very good effort on their part, but the crotch of the hangup had wedged into the standing tree. We gave them a nice easy stick to pull right after to keep their confidence up and they continued throughout the rest of the morning giving it their best. It was nice to have such a situation to work them in with many knowledgeable people at hand and real work to accomplish.

October 26, 2011 at 12:54 am #69856BaystatetomParticipantWhat a nice team you have, they make it look easy, not fast and jerky like mine. Comes with age and practice I suppose. I have two more woodlots to administer timber sales on and then I am hitting the woods with my team for the winter in the name of TSI. Can not wait!
I would get some round up on that multiflora though its not going to go away on its own. The increase in sunlight and ground scarification from harvesting trees will actually make it a lot worse. 5% Round Up out of a mist blower will take it right out.

~TomThanks, Tom, they are getting older so they don’t work fast by choice but they are steady and they can lug out some pretty good loads if they have to. I have been fighting multiflora encroaching in my pastures for at least 5 or 6 years, tried to control it with clipping but that does not work, only gets worse. I think I will spot spray the pastures with Crossbow next spring, not sure what I will do in the woodlot. That stuff is really wicked, Will and Abe hate it.
October 26, 2011 at 3:37 am #69842dominiquer60ModeratorCrossbow works, but it has also been mentioned on this site that cutting the roses and painting the stump directly with herbicide is effective and very exact use of a chemical.
Has anyone here tried using hogs to combat multiflora?
October 26, 2011 at 5:38 am #69837RodParticipantHi Tim
