I’m looking for a single farm horse. I live in Cambridge NY just over the border from Bennington VT. My wife and I are starting a small diversified farm and I’m committed to doing it completely calorie powered, which means I am going to need a hand with the heavy jobs. I have had horses most of my life, drove ponies as a kid, sliegh rides commercially in colorado, and managed a farm with a team of suffolk mares this last year.
The ideal horse for me would be a farm chunk. I would like something around 15 hands but from 14 to 16 ish would do the trick. I like big horses but I see no sense in just feeding bone that I wont need. I will keep the horse barefoot most of the time, so it needs to have good feet and be any easy keeper. Breeding doesnt matter as long as it is a medium sized chunky calm horse that likes to have a job. Ideally the horse would be broke to harness but I will work with a green horse if it seems right.
The work will consist of moving water tanks, hauling firewood/sap, light garden work, driving produce and our family of 3 to market, and hopefully relieving me of my schythe in the futre for light haying (enough hay for the horse, a cow, and a few sows)
If those “restrictions” arent enough we are on a very tight budget 😉 I know that there are horses out there that fit this bill and are in need of a job, and Im still 28 so I have the stamina to work alone untill the right horse comes around for the right price. I have teamster and vet references if needed.
If you know of anything that sounds right give me a call (518)677-3925. I dont go on the internet very much anymore so the phone is really the only reliable way to get ahold of me.Thanks

I know they have a number of very nice draft horses right now. Off the top of my head they have a clydesdale and a percheron that might work for you. Most people assume that since they run a rescue, all their horses are either old or broken, but nothing could be further from the truth. The adoption fee is very reasonable as well, just need to be a ‘herd member’ for a year…10 bucks a month.
