I currently work with a cant hook thats some where around 40″ in length and am looking to pick up a peavey, my question is what length would be best for general purpose log work? Just looking for opinions as I guess there are many variables to consider. Thanks.

    Doug,
I have two 4 footers that suit me very well for all-around woods work. I know some folks on here prefer longer ones though.

    Doug:

I have used a 48″ peavey for a few years and purchased a 36″ peavey this year. My thought was that I would use the bigger peavey on large logs and the smaller on firewood. However, I use the 3 footer exclusively. I have found that rolling logs is much more about technique than leverage and force. Generally speaking, if I can’t roll it with the 3 footer I won’t be able to with the 4 foot peavey. The 3 foot peavey is much easier to handle.

is it not ironic that I posted recently that I was lookingfor a cant hook or a peavey? A catalog that I look at alot is Lehmans non electric Catalog. Lehmans .com their hooks are between $109. and $119. the handles are 54″ and they are saying that they are long. As I said in my post I was wanting to pick one up cheaper than that if I could find one used. Keep me in mind please if you do. Thanks.

A true American creation, I guess. It was invented by Joseph Peavey of Bangor, ME. He didn’t patent it (story goes he got drunk on the way to the patent office and a friend took it and went without him while he was sleeping), but it got his name and his family always made them.

You should try one out, John. They’re handy.

    John:

I would definitely spring for an actual peavey rather than the “mill favorite”. The peavey has a pick, essential for prying and levering logs, while “mill favorite” does not.

it seems to me that the wood in the handle effects the cost.

Try Northern Tool – search for ‘peavey’ – it shows wooden handle one for $40, and an aluminum (!?!) for $70 – same with the cants…

If you decide to buy one from Northern Tool check the reviews first. It may save you some money in the long run.
