I’ve been spending more time with my dad. He’s getting on in years and has led such an interesting life. Thought I might share a few stories from his past with you folks.
He was born and raised right here on the Smiths Fork on the ranch in 1931.

One that came to mind this morning was about our road. Up until my father was 10 the family just walked or rode horseback through the fields to his Uncle’s house to catch the school bus (sometimes a team and wagon or sleigh). This was only about 3/4 mile but had to be inconvenient, no bridges, several forks of the creek, etc.
The summer he was 10 years old he saved his earnings from working in the hay fields for his grand dad, driving team raking, mowing, running the overshot stacker, etc., to have a road graded down our hill to his mothers’ house. He worked 47 days in the hay field at $2 a day. Total of $84. He then went to town and hired a man to come with his D4 cat and do the work. Took his whole summer pay check. That was in 1941.

Not many 10 year old boys would do something similar nowaday I would bet.

    That is the truth.
J-L you have realized the same thing I did. “The older I get the smarter my father was”

I think his missing $10 was due to my fat fingers on this keyboard!

To bad there aren’t more people as ambitious as J-L’s Dad and watch their money like Mink. Maybe we wouldn’t have so many problems with society today.
