Does anyone know why MD mower eveners are so narrow? I have 2 MD#9 mowers and both eveners are 34″. I run 42″ eveners and neck yokes and I have had to widen my mower eveners to match my neck yokes. Does anyone use the orignial mower eveners?

My horses are about 1400 lbs. so moderate in size. I find the narrower ones work fine. With a wider evener, I find it catches more in the edge of the unmowed grass, bending it forward which sometime interferes with clean cutting. Jay

My horses aren’t that much bigger (1700-1800 lbs) and the team using this mower is even smaller (1000 lbs each), but I want as much air flow as possible while mowing. I will pay more attention to the interference with grass that you mentioned.

I currently use a 38in. and the team has plenty of room. My team is suffolks 15.2 around 1300 lb. I believe the 38in is a standard size. most oldtymers used for general farm work.May 8, 2012 at 12:23 am #73559Donn HewesKeymasterHi All, I think the standard evener was a 36″, but I am not sure on that. Actually I might be able to look that up at home. 34″, 36″. or 38″ the size was how they were laid out. It determines where the horse walks in relation to the grass. I use 36″ on everything with a couple exceptions. An old high wheel rake will really benefit from a wide evener and yoke as the pole moves on the side hill. I use the 36″ eveners with animals from 1200# to 1800#. The original size might also speak to the size of the horses in use at the time the mowers where made.
