With the dry weather and lack of hay I was wondering if it was a good idea to feed the horse ground cob corn. I know corn won’t hurt but what about the cob?

Marshall, my horses eat the whole plant…silk to stalks and love it. Though whether it would be a good substitute for normal forage is unclear to me.

Jen, do you feed them when the stalks are still green or after they turn brown too?

Alittle bit of both. I feed it once I am done picking the corn I want…so its on the brown side, but not completely.

For the past 4 years (since I started the gardening), I’ve fed my donkeys (and, at the time, my boss’ mules) just like Jen says she does…they love it, and it seems to be good for them. The donks are also getting this year, a whole bunch of pigweed along with the stunted corn stalks I get a lot of in this heat.

This year I have about 5.5 acres of OP corn so I guess they will get some stalks along with the cows. Thanks for the replies.
