I have been lurking for some time now while I look for property so haven’t really posted anything. However I was curious as to how hydraulics might be accepted for use with draft horses? There does not seem to be a 3 point hitch cart that everyone finds satisfactory so what about pull type implements that use hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower them? Adding a battery, electric motor and hydraulic pump to a forecart would seem fairly simple.

yes they are simple. I think I & J makes carts with just the battery and hydraulics. Also most motorized PTO carts also have hydraulics. They also make a thing called a hydraulic accumulator; it accumulates pressure awhile you move and stores it. You can use the hydraulics as long as the built up pressure lasts.

I know that the motorized PTO carts or at least some have hydraulics but that drives up the cost not to mention the noise if not needed.

Not sure how many pull type implements are available in the appropriate size for a team though.

EDIT – Apparently I did not look very hard http://www.ruralheritage.com/Scraps/DSC_0686.jpg

I have built and used a couple of three wheel cart with three point hitchs. For the most part they do a good job, although if the implement is to heavy it will cause the front end to be light and rasie up(counter wieghts help to remedy that problem). I have built most of the implements for the carts, the only thing that I haven’t got perfected is a round bale mover. One problem with the three wheel cart is that it takes some getting used to when trying to back up(turns real quick).
