First test drive with the new to me Forest Ind. log arch. I also decided to fab up a plug yoke for the arch. I was a little nervous once I had cut down the pole (it looked very short compared to my other poles) but I think it came out about right. If anything I think I could shorten it even a little bit more.

not really, this is a tested design, it’s been around for a lot of years. you have a good view of what is going on, but if you aren ‘t comfortable on the cart you can always alk to one side.

Plug yoke looks great. I use a similar design on my arch and it is a real asset in the woods. The short pole length allows you to work in tight spaces with a team, and it also fits in my trailer with my horses, making transport to job sites much easier. How do you find the arch works with a load on? I used an older version of that arch and found it to be heavy and unbalanced with a load on – too much pole weight. It looks at though they may have made some changes in the version you have there.

I have had a chance to get some wood on the arch here recently and it seems to work well. I agree that without a load the pole weight is less than ideal, but that does seem to be offset once it is loaded, i.e. the lift of the wood under motion seems to balance the arch/pole nicely. I hope to start logging a 75 acre wood lot this winter, provided that we don’t get a lot of snow right off I will be spending more time with the arch and can give a more detailed analysis.
By the way I just missed the chance to say hello to you at The Depot a week or so ago. I thought I saw your truck in the parking lot one morning but must have just missed you inside. We should grab a coffee some morning when you have a minute.

Happy to have a cup of coffee and talk shop. Next time you are over our way you should swing up to the farm….
