I’ve seen this done but wanted to know if anyone could shed more light on what I’m trying to do. Pa has a old kicker wagon for small square bails and when I was feeding hay to my horses to day I came across a pole, and part of a pressed out evener, like the 4 abrest ones. A light clicked and i said to my self ” I bet thats off the old kicker wagon” went and check it out, sure enough. now I want to use this to my advantage, I want to build a runner set up to use the wagon to give rides in the winter time. and then use it to move hay and give rides in the summer.

    thanks

Pioneer has runners that fit on their forecart and wagon. check them out to give you some ideas.

I can’t remember exactly what they do to a set of runners if they are bolted to the hubs of the axle. But a stay chain or something is attached so the runner doesn’t “flip” upside down if it catches in a rut or doesn’t run up over a pile of snow.

Yes, they are bolted on just like the wheels are, and yes, you want to use stay chains.

how could you make a stay chain if it was on a regular style running gear? would it be ok if i just made a stop that would hit the spindle? or what else should i hook on?

In the back you could just run a chain up to the rack. the steering in the front makes it more difficult, especially if it’s not a fifth-wheel steer. Not sure how Pioneer does it. anything that will stop the ski from flipping .

I built runners that bolt onto the hubs of a regular running gear. I found though that you can’t use a regular pole setup like you would use on a fifth wheel or regular bobsled. You need an auto steer setup , because with a regular wagon the runners are bind. Will try to send picture if you’re interested.

I used old snowmobile skis cut a 10 inch piece of the truss where it bolts to the snowmobile welded in a 10 inch piece 4 inch chanel the sli, welded a cut out rim to a spacer and wraped the cutout with 1.5 inch flat bar for strength. I got the rims and skis free from the land fill. Eli

how would you do that on a wagon that would have tie rods and not have a 5th wheel

i think a fifth wheel would work fine our cart/sleigh turns like a fifth wheel. Eli.

yeah i agree but I dont have a 5th wheel set up, it uses a normal running gear on the farm

Now that I reread your post I get it, sorry about that. I saw a u tube video with skis on a people hauler with a tie rod set up. I would probably use 1 1/2″ or 2″ x 1/4″ flat bar around the cut out rim so it could handle the twisting better, but otherwise snowmobile skis are pretty tuff I wouldn’t be afraid to try it. I think you can buy them from pioner made for that application. Eli

no problem, I hope I didnt sound snippy, I normally have something that pops in my head but I cant think of anything that would work.
