    Hello everyone,

I’m wondering if any of you that have hame covers could measure the size of them. I’m looking at making a pair and don’t know the sizes. If you could let me know the length, width and also the opening for the hole.

    Thanks
    Tim

I have a set of those, I’ve attached pictures. Haven’t had a chance to clean them up yet, though. They’re about 14″ wide x 47″ long, but they have some taper/curve to them. The new ones I’ve seen look squared off to me. If you like the look of these, I could make you a tracing of the upper and lower parts and mail it to you, or if you’re more tech savvy, I could generate a scaleable vector image and email it to you.

Well, it’s been discussed on here before. It’s thought that they were originally either to protect the collar from heavy snow/rain or to prevent dust, dirt, and chaff from getting in/around/under the collar. These days they seem to be mostly ornamental. Kind of a farm team equivalent of scotch collars. I’m sure that’s why my father got them.

Doing sleigh rides, I use them when we are out when it’s snowing either for rides or breaking trail as said above, to keep the shoulders dryer. I find it helps. Jay

Hame covers have their start, near as I can tell, back during the horse drawn freight wagon days. 1700’s and 1800’s etc. They seem to have developed to offer the collars and hames protection from the elements. of all the harness, the collars and hames are the most difficult to construct and repair, you’d want to do what you can to make them last. The ornamentation developed as a way for teamsters to dress up their rig, show off a bit. Professional teamsters were prideful and liked to look good on the road.

Now hame covers are primarily decorative.
