It’s that time of year to start thinking about July…

    http://www.horseprogressdays.com/welcome.asp

July 5th & 6th to be exact! The 20th Annual Horse Progress Days will be in Arcola, Illinois this year. About 2 hours from St. Louis, Chicago and Indianapolis, the “broom corn capital of the world” features local attractions such as the Rockome Gardens and the Illinois Amish Museum.

The real attraction will be dozens of teams, rows of draft animal equipment, tents full of vendors, demonstrations, lectures and a lot of good food. For those of you who have been to one, you know that there is no other event like it. To those that have never been, take my word, there is “Something for Everyone” at this event that can attract 10,000-20,000 visitors. I went for the first time last year, and though it was blazing hot, I had a great time and brought home a truck load of parts and equipment.

Horse Progress Days rotates through 6 locations in the Midwest and PA, each community different and offering the best of the area. If you are interested in attending I recommend looking for accommodations soon, as the local places fill up fast. If you are thinking about having draft horses and would like to take advantage of the opportunity to learn how to harness and drive horses, Horse Progress Days offers a unique chance to do so.

Horse Progress Days will again be offering the Draft Horse Farming Exploratory classes.

Instructors will again be Ferman Wengerd and Kim Hadwen. Originally it was thought that this would be a one day class, taking place on Thursday only before the event officially got under way. As it turned out, it made much more sense to keep the classes going on Friday and Saturday, giving the students more hands on experience with the valuable resources in instructors, horses, and equipment that was there. Since the introductory tuition of $300 per person was meant to cover one day and the classes actually will cover three days, a decision has been made to raise the tuition to $500 for 2012. included in the tuition is free access to the event all three days, a $30 value.

The classes will be limited to 6-8 students and will be filled first come first served. Call Ferman Wengerd at 330-857-6340 with questions and to reserve your spot in the program as a student.

I just wanted to promote this great event because Horse Progress Days has long been a supporter of DAPNet and the former Northeast Animal-Power Field Days, now know as Draft Animal-Power Field Days. DAPNet thanks Horse Progress Days tremendously for their support.

I hope everyone makes the time to attend at some point, safe travels this coming July!

Anyone driving to HPD from the Northeast? With a truck? I’m looking for a ride home for a piece of equipment… if you’re going or know someone who is, please reply or send me an email. Thanks!

I was at the Horse Progress Days on Friday. I had a wonderful time, the weather was perfect. I was able to pick up some needed parts although I didn’t, get everything I needed, as I am only about 2 1/2 hours south of Arthur, I figured now I have a reason to go back. I hope everyone had as good a time as me.

Thanks for sharing, Stephen. I hate to admit my ignorance, but what is that machine in the first photo? Is it a rototiller? I guess I am now more painfully aware that I need to get to HPD – I had no idea that all those tasks had been horse-abled. Love?? the horse-pack sprayer – great pics, thanks

Right, Bekah, that first pic is a rotovator, I think it was about 8′ width. I got the impression that the HPD in Illinois maybe leans to the big hitches and the power carts because even the Amish are drawn into commodity cropping of soy and corn. On the positive side, good for them for finding a way to keep their families farming. Even so, was great to see the new ground drive innovations (from I&J in particular) making a good showing. Also, plenty of produce equipment for single and team on display. I think the Ohio event in 2014 will probably lean more to produce farming, as there is a lot more of that going on in the region.

The 2nd set of pics shows the Pioneer Crumbler, a 3′ section of spring teeth followed by a roller/crumbler, good for single or small team, and can be ganged into multiple sections.
Also, 2 pics of Anny’s All-In-One which will be demo’d at APFD in Barton VT Sept 28-29.
The All-In-One can be used with single or team, it has an array of quick detach tools, and can be off-set for bed cultivation.
