I need a pitman arm for the McCormic mower I hope to cut hay with this summer. I think my dad used ash but I was about less than 10 when we got our fast hitch mower. I not sure what model it is it is kind of parked in corner so I didn’t get a close look at it. It has steel wheels my neighbor thinks it’s a #7 his uncle bought it new. It also needs anew pole. Hope to pull it out next week weather permitting. I guess I could have just asked if ash will work for a pitman arm? Thanks Eli

Ash seems fine to me. You do want something tough enough to not snap too easily but weak enough to break before any other component in the system – IMO it’s meant to act similar to a shear pin/bolt.

Thanks. This may sound crazy but after 40 yrs I can remember the smell when He drilled and sawed them. Eli

I have used ash for pitmans, though more recently I have used it for poles. You’ll probably want a 14’er for the pole. These days I get pitman sticks from Norm Macknair – they run about $10 +shipping. In my experience, you cant beat that with a stick (so to speak) – as the length is exactly right and the holes all drilled just right. I would recommend a new bearing on the flywheel end of the pitman stick – norm has those also. Macknair’s # is 717-543-5136 Good luck. Jay

For ten bucks each I will order some and the bushing. Still have to make sure what model it is. My neighbor wants to paint it to as long as its out. So I will be cutting in style hopefully. Thanks. Eli

Yes, the stick is a different length for different mowers. The new ready made sticks are nice. Making a stick is difficult if you have one for a pattern. drilling good square holes is the key. I clamp the pattern on top and drill down through. The new bolts and plates should be all the same size, 5/16″. But it is easy to call and get one!
