I would like to clip my pastures with my horses (15 rotationally grazed acres). I am looking at:
a brush hog on a trailer hitch behind a ground driven/motorized forecart with hydraulics;
a pull along DR 42″ field and brush mower;
a sickle bar mower (perhaps the new I & J).
I was wondering if any of you had any experience with these or any other ideas? Reva 860-928-0754December 7, 2013 at 9:46 am #81803Rick AlgerParticipantHi Reva,
I have used a pull-behind self-powered mower similar to the DR. It worked well once the horses were sensitized to it. If you go this route, I suggest you get one with electric start and remote controls. I didn’t, so I have to get off the forecart to stop and start the engine.I’ve also used old sicklebar mowers. They work fine as well, but call for quite a bit of maintenance and tinkering. I have no experience with the I&J model.
I think the motorized forecart would be overkill.
Good luck.

I would second Rick’s comments on the DR. Carl uses this tool as well for pasture management, and it seems to work well. I use a old sickle bar behind my team, and it works OK when grass it not too thick, and then I also borrow a neighbor’s tractor and rush hog when things are sticky. I would like to have a DR.
