We’re having issues with our horses getting their tie ropes wrapped around and tie clips caught on our newly installed automatic watering bowls. They are also splashing around and making quite a wet mess. Wondering if anyone has heard of or is using hog or cattle nipple waterers for horses or has any alternate suggestions. Any and all info appreciated! Thanks, Nate (Natural Roots Apprentice)

I never make water available to my animals in their stalls. I keep a watering barrel with fresh water, and lead them to water 2-3 times daily.

Hi gang, my feeders are divided below the bowl so while two animals share the each bowl, their ropes are just long enough for a drink and there is nothing to wrap around. There is some water out of them, but it has never caused me any problem. Maybe you can shorten the ropes?

If I were home every day, a system that involved me watering them might work for me, but the water bowls have worked great for me for about the last 10 years. I don’t use them in the winter as they are not frost free.

I have worked at several barns where the automatic waters had to be disconnected in some stalls because the horses found them too recreational, seems to be an individual vice. Or, like Donn said, they had not been drained before a hard frost and they burst and flooded the barn.

Tying them away from it might work. Is it possible in this setup to leave them loose, so they can’t wrap their lead? I don’t keep water in my horses tie stalls. I water them before and after work.
