I am back on the job we did most of last fall and once again we are trying to figure out what to do with the largest diameter pines, with butt logs 34-36″ at the small end. When I looked around before most mills will not take that large a log, the only options being small speciality mills that do mostly wide pine flooring. They are picky about when the logs are cut (winter time only) and want to see the trees on the stump before committing to buy the logs. This makes it a hassle for this job. We are able to cut and move them, but hardly worth it if we can’t market the wood. Some of these trees need to be cut as they are shading out large areas of mid-story stems beneath the canopies. Does anyone have any other ideas here?
