I just picked up some straps from the harness shop to use as front sidebacker straps for my d ring harness. I am a little concerned on their strength. They are double nylon about 1.5 inches wide with a belt buckle. How tough should these be? I know that is a hard question because it depends on the load etc. but is it common to use belt buckles for some of these critical parts?
I am comfortable using them for my logging arch because I am rarely slowing down much of a load, but farm work is coming on fast and I want to swap them out in the next couple of months if need be.
Is it ok to use conway buckles with nylon? I am new to nylon but that is all this shop carries and “it will have to do fer’ now”
Thanks

March 22, 2016 at 6:46 pm #88454Carl RussellModeratorJared, I have no problem with nylon as a material. I am sure that the straps themselves would be entirely rugged enough. The problem I have had with nylon straps is that they tend to be cheapened, and the buckles are shit. I had a set of nylon harnesses with front side straps where the buckles were not a continuous piece of steel on the front cross piece. It is difficult to tell because this piece has a steel roller around it, but any buckle under load should be a continuous piece. Just under normal conditions with the harness fitted tight the tang collapsed the roll of light steel and came completely undone…. useless.
As far as Conways, I also use them on jack saddle straps and britchen straps, but I would not use them on a strap under the load such as the front side strap.

When you said belt buckle I asssume you are talking about a proper quality harness buckle. I would much prefer a buckle to a conway in this location as you can adjust it. Also conways with nylon can be a problem. They won’t always, but it is easy for the harness maker to make holes a little big or a little loose and the conways will not stay were you put them. Conways do work in nylon, but they can also be a problem. Look at some britchens made of nylon and conways and you may find the buckle slowly slipping down the strap. Carl must type faster than me! His comments are similar to mine.

It is the type that has a bar through the middle that the clasp pin attaches to and it isnt very burly metal. I am saving my pennies and I will upgrade in the next couple of months before I try to slow down bigger loads.
