    I think two years would be rugged unless you were experienced. I castrate at one year so they thicken up in the neck. Between six months and a year is good. Too early and I believe it can affect their urinary tract.

    I castrate them early, very – at a week to a month old
    they never know they miss anything;
    I would castrate them, depending on what I want; the later the more Bull-like the animal – statue and behaviour – the earlier, the larger the animal (supposedly 😉 )
    the urinary tract itself won’t run into any problems, no scientific proof for any problems; the connecting tissue however between prepuce and penis will not break down when castrated early, thus preventing extention of the latter

    I have banded early as well as waiting a year and have not yet noticed much difference. My current team is plenty beefy and they were banded. I think the best way to get a thick neck is to pull logs. I also haven’t had any urinary tract problems, knock on wood. So basically it comes down to what is easiest for your situation. Banding is easy and cheap as opposed to getting a vet to cut them later. Personally I don’t like crimping because I haven’t had great success that method.

    Breed may affect ideal castration age, as well as intent. If you have a large, slow growing breed but are not going into competition pulling, you might castrate later than if you have a smaller, faster growing breed and want to maximize adult size.
