We have an image that we have been using to represent DAPNet, just look at the top of all the webpages, http://www.draftanimalpowernetwork.org/board_of_directors.html. It is a beautiful drawing of some of Carl’s harness, yoke and horseshoes in his barn that a friend drew for them. It has wonderful detail and I really like the looks of it on our webpage.

With that said I think Ethan’s idea of having a perhaps easier to distinguish logo may be an idea to look into.

Good news Dough you are not the first to have this problem. Here is a link to a post from a while back that addresses a similar situation.

I had an add up for years, it may still be there, I only had a handful of inquires, only one of which was a possibility, and by then I had found something else. It is not the fastest method, but it only works if people post to the site. If you post now, you could be waiting for years, or worst case something shows up quick and maybe you can make some plans with someone thinking of retiring. NYFarmNet is a great service/resource to look into for many of your concerns and needs, plus when you call them you get a real person on the line.

    dl,
Are you familiar with the NYFarmnet’s NYFarmlink program, they have a website with a list of participating farmers looking for land, looking for someone to turn over land as they retire from farming etc. It can take a while to find the right place for you, so it doesn’t hurt to start looking now. I would post link, but computer is acting up.

“If you are used to draft horses you can transition into oxen pretty easily I bet.”

I was a horse person, then I learned how simple it was to obtain and train a pair of calves. Once you know how assertive you need to be with a particular team the rest comes fairly easy. If you are ever in the Albany, NY area let me know, you are welcome to give my team a try.

#4 could just be “calendar of events” type of events, you let us know what is going on when and we can post it, but we are not necessarily endorsing any aspect of the event.

At the moment I think membership starts at $20 and goes to $100+

I feel that they should be members to support our organization. If we are going scratch their back with promotions and teamsters with teams, they should scratch ours.

I feel the same about DAP members that use this forum religiously and don’t want to kick down $20 a year to help pay for the website and tech support. But assuming that most would not pay if forced to, it would ruin the diversity and effectiveness of the forum for sure.

If we are going to endorse a persons event as an educational network, I strongly feel that they should be a member of the network. It was once brought up in another conversation that presenters at field days should perhaps be members as well, representing us without being a member of the network is sort of like selling a product that you like enough to use but not enough to pay for.

There is no shame in working beef animals or heifers, with enough training any cattle can work well for you. If you start with beef, just be prepared for dairy calves to be slightly different. My experience is that my shorthorns are slightly more flighty, but the beef taught me a lot and I feel that my shorthorrns are an improvement on what I did with my beef. With that said, my beef heifer could probably out pull either of my shorthorns, that was one motivated heifer.

Andy, If you get a pair of calves just remember that they still need ample nutrition to grow well and don’t thrive on old first cut until they are older.

Maybe switching my team was a little easier because they are younger and we were in a training pen, but we are all creatures of habit. I imagine if you switched more often stand in and stand out maybe less confusing, or you just need to be consistent with how you trained them originally and go with what works.

Good to bring this back up, I have been dealing with some bad dandruff and was thinking it may be time to bring another fecal sample to the vet to see what I need to combat this time of year. I don’t like having to use dewormer, but at least with the fecal I know what I am up against. I’ll see what they say about the mites and dandruff, they are the largest cattle practice in NY east of the Hudson in the heart of dairy country, if it is out there they may have dealt with it before.
