I will buy RH magazine when there are articles I wish to read but, I believe two years ago, a lady with mini mules posted an article in their magazine about having “beaten out” the drafts in every class, in one of our big shows here in VA. I wrote a rebuttle, sent photo’s of what she was “embellishing” on and corrected all her claims, as they were false. RH did not put my full rebuttal and claim in their letters to the editor, greatly editing it so that it really did not make much sense nor did it help with this woman claiming things that were hugely false. So, live and learn…..
DraftDriverParticipantThe ring the team is in is at the VA State Fair, we placed 2nd in the antique farm wagon class…I was quite pleased as by then, I had been driving them together for about 2 weeks.
But yes, Culpeper..cross our dirt road and your in Rixeyville. If your ever down our area, please, stop by and sit a spell, we can tell stories and I love to hear anything draft. And you can meet Trixi and Smoke…I also have two QH as well, Lucy and Terry.
DraftDriverParticipantAh well thank you Jean!!! That is really nice of you!
DraftDriverParticipantHope it isn’t too late to join in this…I have two mentors..the first one is my adopted “dad” Bill Arant. Bill taught me so much as a young wet behind the ears girl who was as horse crazy as the day was long. He taught me to saddle, bridle, cinch a saddle in my sleep, and never once did I EVER see this man raise a hand in anger. He wore spurs but only touched his old Saddlebred Red with them, he sang softly under his breath when we trail rode, he was the president of the Nevada Pony Express Reride group and gave me my own 5 mile stretch on my mare Belle to ride as a “male” pony express rider and carried the mail on her, and taught me so much about riding a horse, being kind, getting into their mind to figure out why they acted or did what they did, and he gave me away at my wedding to my high school sweetheart, Mark. So many things I could say about this man, the way he hands laid on the withers of a horse, how kind and gentle he was to an equine, and how proud I was to call him when I won my first blue ribbon with my Percheron mare, Smoke. He passed away at 83 years old a year and a half ago, my heart still aches for his voice, and at times, I still have a hard time with his passing.
My other mentor, who is worthy of being as loved as Bill was, is Bob Brennan. The man has been showing horses for over 30 years, can take a group of Percherons, put them together in a hitch and win a class, he is soft spoken, he too, you won’t find lifting a hand in anger to any draft horse, is patient when I ask him what things are on a plow or a harness, is knowledgeable and has shown me that when you have a great team, you can put their trust in them and they will do the same for you. He has shown me how to handle the lines on my team, how to hitch them properly and with care, safety issues that may come up, and when I go into a class, to smile and be calm but what to know and watch for. Again, so many things I could say about this man, and I can only hope I am half the horse woman and teamster that Bob and Bill are.

Is one of those mares Smoke?
Yes….why? I don’t know whether to ask do you know us or not. I recently got myself into a big can of worms and hesitate anymore to say anything.
But if you know Smoke due to my being very proud of that mare, well…that’s my girl!

I apologize for being late coming into the conversation but read what happened and was concerned. Have you worked with her with the stone boat? How did she do? We don’t do parades or other big events where dogs are prevalent, as I too am concerned about them getting away from their owners and going after the dogs.
I have a neighbor who has a miniature heeler mix dog that when I go riding on his trails, she comes out and has gone so far as to go after my QH heels. He flips his ears back and I watch him closely as he does not tolerate dogs under him and because of her size, I worry he is going to kick her hard enough to hurt her or buck and kick, and I hit the ground. I am not young anymore and when I hit, I don’t bounce!
We have talked to him about it, he laughs and said if she gets kicked, she will learn. But again, I don’t want to be the one to have to tell him the kick killed his dog, not “taught her a lesson”.
DraftDriverParticipantMy first harness was a simple driving harness and I had Ms. Zimmerman make it for me from another harness I brought in. She is very good, proficient and doesn’t mind answering questions at all. Reasonably priced as well and does a great job on the harness itself.

Hi draft driver! Another one from Va eh? Well good! Glad to have you. You wouldn’t mind telling us where in VA you are would you? I’m in Stafford if you know where that is…….. Anyhow we’re glad to have you!
~~RMorning Robernson and Carl…I am in Rixeyville, not sure if you know where that is. I am familiar where Stafford is, half way to D.C.? Were about an hour from D.C ourselves, just went and spent the weekend up in Annapolis and did some holiday shopping with a friend.
I really enjoy working the team, I had been driving single for about 5 years, our new mare, was at one time my mare’s team mate and they are getting back into the groove of driving together now. I try to drive as often as I can and am hoping in the summer I can take a few driving classes.
Here is the team:
