I never considered training them to stop when I fall – very good idea though and one I will try…
I wear sturdy footwear mostly with steel toe caps (although not for riding, naughty I know but i find big heavy boots a bit of a burden up there, trainers are like slippers and i can move about like a monkey much better :D) although when I have been trodden on they manage never to get the toes
I keep my mobile phone in my pocket so if i do fall and can’t get up i can still reach it…
Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantWell he’s having a grand old time out on grass for the summer anyway 😀
Nat(wasIxy)Participantwow thats a brilliant account – I’ve read about that trip in vague terms but never found anything more detailed.
I’m finding my simmi is getting more comfy as he fills out 😀
Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantI know those people too 😮 – looks like we all know each other!?
Nat(wasIxy)Participantahhhh she had it – thats probably why she’s been missing….:o
Nat(wasIxy)Participantthanks I know anne! She comes here doesn’t she?
seems the steer riding world is a small one…
Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantAh yes I love PBR too! I only recently discovered it because nobody really knows about it in the UK, it’s buried in the TV listings and you have to pay extra to get it  animal rights activists would have a fit over here aswell!
I know a few people who do ride cattle in the normal kind of way though and wondered if anyone who used their for draught also rode too?
To be honest movement restrictions over here will stop me going anywhere but it’s nice to have a little wander round the paddock – I’ve free-jumped mine too, they get very enthusiastic; if one goes over the other has to to get a treat aswell! 😀
Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantOut of curiosity – what noise do the buffalo make? do they moo?
Nat(wasIxy)Participantquite an acheivement i think, without any kind of pen aswell!
Nat(wasIxy)Participantah Dent yes, i know it very well – beautiful…still not sure about the gate thing though!
Nat(wasIxy)Participantahh i love it up there – dont know about all the gates though, we’ve had cattle grids for years now so you must have been somewhere REALLY out of the way! roads are narrow but hey, sheep can’t graze tarmac! 😀
Nat(wasIxy)Participantsounds like it could be a go-er then! I cant imagine anything MORE intelligent and gentle than my oxen! 😉
Nat(wasIxy)Participantthanks for that – you couldn’t see a problem with starting a calf later though? given that its been suckled by it’s mother and not handled?

Hello,
welcome to this forum. Where are you located in England?
at the moment, lincolnshire, although by the end of the year I hope to move to my partner’s farm in yorkshire 😀 just want to make use of the summer grass down here first 😉
as for farming methods – for me its all about making as few big investments as possible – no machinery and massive buildings…get the cattle to feed and water themselves, get other animals and organisms to sort out pests and pasture maintenance = I have no work to do 😀
Using electric fencing I move (or try to) the cattle/buffalo onto fresh pasture every day so they leave their droppings and worms behind. They skim off the lush grass, then i follow them with sheep which neaten it up and then follow with chickens and turkeys which scratch and spread the droppings and eat any parasites they find. I’m also hatching a plot to build swallow and swift housing to encourage them to hunt flies and midges around the cattle. This should cut down on the wormers and fly repellents i need to buy.
I’m also finding this makes much better use of the grass than just letting them run across one big field – that way you get overgrazed and undergrazed patches, and weeds – this way every scrap is eaten and weeds dont get a chance!
Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantI dont like gee and haw…i have a hard enough time working out left and right in my head without adding another word! I’ve just made up all my commands and tried to pick words that sound distinctive and unlike the names. Luckily left and right sound very different! I use ‘walkon!’ to get them going, ‘stand’ for stop and ‘steadyyyy’ for ‘DONT RUSH YOU LITTLE BRATS!?’ 😀 I use ‘over’ to get them to move their hinds away from me when they’re tied so I think for sidestepping (which I havent tried yet) I’ll use the ‘put in’and ‘put out’ idea…
