We plan to get started in the house cow idea too.. we had thought of share milking with the calf. Do you consider this a good idea.. or will she be more agressive. Is it better to take the calf away altogether ??…
JohnjacParticipantOur problem Mitch, is mud… Our fields would resemble the Somme {its rememberence sunday here tomorrow BTW} with 5 Clydes I might need to build a sand corral so I can turn them out..I dont have enough work for them in winter and end up hitching them up just to get their legs stretched.. but the rain we get here makes it a miserable operation for us all sometimes:D… I often wonder how that pregnant mare urine thing they do works out.. are they not all stalled….
JohnjacParticipantDo all you guys with tie stalls have a corral or turn out area if the weather turns really bad ? if you dont then how long can you leave the horses without exercise.. I have loose boxes but like the idea of stalls. Im a bit concerned about the lack of movement tho.. mind you i suppose they dont get a lot of exercise in a box either…
JohnjacParticipantfeeding hay on the floor has the added benefit of keeping the horses jaw in alignment. Hay racks and hay nets have the horse eating at an unusual angle which effectivly brings the lower jaw back and helps to create hooks which then cause all sorts of problems with the bit…
JohnjacParticipantWe run Clydes and depending how i have the team set up, the check line is from 4″ to 7″ longer …..
JohnjacParticipant1st real frost of the winter today. Suns up and life is good… Total reverse of last week. 60mph winds with horizontal rain… lots of it. Snow up at Perth yesterday. Hope we get a repeat of last year. We need more frost…..
JohnjacParticipantExperienced another dose of the heart and trust in our draft animals today… My daughter and Caitlyn took the mares out to try the new plow {fotos to follow when I start to make a job that doesnt look like a quarry:o}.. Anyway… we finally got it going not to bad. About 30′ out from an old beech tree we hit a root. The horses felt it a split second before me and “changed gear”. the shear bolt broke with a bang and they lunged forward.. not from fright but from the forward momentum of their extra pull… as soon as I called a woa they stood totally still. I was so proud of the way they handled it. Belle ,the youngster, took to walking in the furrow really quick.. Caitlyn was less than complementary of the plowing……
JohnjacParticipantI didnt know that Marshall… but if its any consolation Tony Blair went from Eton to politics and this lot we have in now are even younger !!! What gets me is that the leaders may change but the “advisers” stay ???… load of croc.. thats my considered opinion :D… best regards Marshall…..
JohnjacParticipantRod that quote brings it home to me just how fast we as a society have slipped into that abyss Carl mentioned.!! basic skills all but gone.. replaced with what ??? Non sustainability…. Mitch that was a great story of human endevour.. if thats the right word.. Thank you guys, for anchoring me again…
JohnjacParticipantMitch whats a boom chain :o?
jacParticipantYes they are real addictive :).. the wheel on my mower is 8′ around, the taller the wheel is the better grip you will have for th higher torque start ups.. keep us posted with it.. im allways looking for new ways to do things to…best luck..
JohnjacParticipantI think there are some tough times ahead for he developed world. The systems in place are non sustainable and it seems to have taken a hundred years to wind down.. 2 world wars propped it up for a while but now its gone .. why else are the banks getting bailed out all the time? playing with money that isnt real is always going to be a non starter. In the early days a lot of land owners and mill owners and army types went into politics.. these people had their finger on the pulse/ Nowadays we have “professional” polititians !!!! these guys have never held a job down for cryin out loud… so how can they decide a countries future?? ….Im trying to become completly self sufficient but its hard to step off the tread mill..
JohnjacParticipantWelcome aboard Tanner.. your on a great site here…
JohnjacParticipantAt 3 an half miles/hr with an 8ft circumferance wheel on the axle your shaft is turning at.. 157 rpm.. give or take so a 3.5 increase would be near the 540.. I can totally understand wanting a more constant drive for horse drawn machines and perhaps a way of gearing up or down would be a good option.. I just think that horses are too variable for us to be able to keep up with the changes and you might spend most of your time trying to keep the gearing spot on ?? Im to lazy for that and just want to sit back and enjoy the time 🙂 Its certainly worth a try though…
JohnjacParticipantOldKat we have a coalition government over here now .. the power is split with 2 of them.. our prime minister doesnt have it all his own way.. I dont like politics either. Its interesting that these quots came from the 20’s.. A programm on the wireless today was talking about the “modern” banking system of creating money out of nothing and how it actualy started back then.. Perhaps the politics and banking went to hell at around the same time ??
