Thanks for that link OldKat.. for some reason Britain seems to be totally stuck with the traditional ways, or least it is round our way. If these more sustainable practices were used the big guys like monsanto might not have such a grip..Im going to check this out, we are very small scale but with 5 Clydes and soon to be house cow and Cates sheep we need to move into another way of doing this..
Jeez you guys must be having it hard with drought, we moan about the rain over here but i cant start to imagine what it must be like to have a field of stock and no water ..
JohnjacParticipantThats what I was on about OldKat.. thanks for clearing it up.. but the 2 manure piles I have.. one being filled and one sealed up when the horses go out and not spread on my fields till a year later was the “compost” I refered to.. Perhaps I should get more stuff analised..soil,grass,manure ect.. this web site rocks !!!!thanks again…
JohnjacParticipantI really need to read more !! I allwaz thot it was the nitrogen that got trapped as the straw broke down… strip grazing sounds like a plan to me, in a 5 acre field I take it the strips arent too wide so reducing the waste thru trampling…cool…
JohnjacParticipantIxy what size paddocks do you use. We make 2 manure heaps and only spread when its been turned into compost basicly, that helps with the soil tying up nitrogen breaking down the straw material….
John
ps your parcel leaves today;)jacParticipantGreat fotos Donn.. the haybine is a new concept to me as i dont think they were ever exported here. How does it work.. is it discs that cut ? and does it condition the grass as well ?…
JohnjacParticipantHey Ixy your system sounds like it would work in Ayrshire… wet and heavy land.. What kind of stocking rates are you using ?…
JohnjacParticipantI think the car did dismantle communities but not till much later. over here we have small rural villages that were populated by farm workers and folks connected with local trades ie wheelwrites and blacksmiths not to mention small butcher, bakery and grocers shops… now they are filled with lawyers and doctors who just sleep there and dont even use any local shops{nearly all gone} because they buy their food at “Crapco” on the way home. And because they can afford to buy houses so easily the prices have skyrocketed and real country folk cant afford to stay.. We had a local silage contractor told to stop by the police because of the noise !!! these people have no sense of urgency at harvest time….
I like the idea of a beef x for a house cow.. Ayrshire/Angus mabey…
JohnjacParticipantThanks for that link Cameron….
JohnjacParticipantThats a good observation.. I think the same could be said for a lot of foods.. Chicken for example.. the cheap factory produced bird with bones too soft to support its own weight and crammed into sheds provide 1 meal ???? the more expensive free range bird can also make a pot of soup the next day so to my mind represents better value… but its getting the message across thats the problem..
Stableman the high rainfall over here combined with the heavy Holstien means the land would poach if the herd was left out all year.. but winter housing is still a better option than the 24/7 housing idea…
JohnjacParticipantNever had that problem but a question… What stage is your mare at when you say she isnt broke yet ? Any time I find a horse plying up I always go back to basics again. I think finding ways to keep the harness in place might not be the best option.. Me.. I would go back to the stall and start at the beginning and introduce the harness over a period of time with plenty praise. Conditioning/desensitising her to the harness is the way I would go.. Some might say throw it on and let her fight it out but thats not the way iv done it over the years.. Im sure you’ll get a few different replies..As I always say “It works for me”…good luck …
JohnjacParticipantHi Ralf.. great pictures.. tell us about your hitch cart please. That looks a neat set up for cutting hay..
JohnjacParticipantMark i had the same problem but now when i open the attachment box the list of attachment keys mentions JPG.. I put all my fotos on that foremat and now the machine uploads my fotos no probs. and most of them are 1.25mb ,or something like that, in my file..
JohnjacParticipantDonn ,Mitch posted a foto in the gallery of one he built .I had the same idea but when I looked at the mower I had it was a left hand cut and the pto would be spinning the wrong way…
JohnjacParticipantYes but bring on the other stories Scott…
JohnjacParticipantThe future does seem bleak Ed but surely the likes of Mosanto’s gm crap will die a death when people realise you need more fertilisers and pesticides and not less plus farmsaved seed will not be possible when this lot get going..bivol on this forum told me of a small farmer who had achieved near 6 tons/acre in wheat !! no gm rubbish, just organic husbandry at its best.. Our neighbour who has a dairy farm was telling me just the other day that he could see his cows kept in 24/7 in the near future.. recons they waste more grass than they use ??…
