To accomodate your toe clip you file back until the white line if you want to place your shoe further back. Make sure you leave some room behind the lip to avoid concussions. The same applies for the hoof wall: file it straight, not only the lower part. If you are not that experienced I recommend concentrating on the proper shaping of the shoe (hot of course), proper trimming and less on manipulating, because this is can be too tricky for the novice.
JeroenParticipantNice work! That will be a sturdy and cheap forecart!
1. I have a Pioneer and one with the shafts lower and I prefer the Pioneer setup. Tight turning is much easier for your horse. No rubbing the shafts.
2. That’s ok, in fact with the Pioneer there is too much weight on the horseback when single. I think their design is really for a team setup.
3. Buy yourself a pioneer seat or make an identical one and weld the stem the same way, the Pioneer is for short people only, I made myself one, four inches higher and think its great. Better for your back when seated for hours.August 20, 2013 at 12:21 pm in reply to: [resolved] Bugs being worked on today – Aug 19, 2013 #80848JeroenParticipantDon’t wanna be a spoil, but I thought the server capacity was one of the reasons for the change?
How is it going with the photo galery, the pm and other bugs?
Good luck!
JeroenParticipantGlad you did not got hurt too bad Donn. In fact I know a lot of older men who work or worked drafts an most of them are limping… Makes you wonder.
I always devide wrecks in three categories
– your faults: your errors, material that broke, wrong choice of equipment/harness, driving errors.
– the fault of others: whatever the cause, you could do little about it (big tractors, cars that drive too fast, etc.).
– the horses fault: not well trained, off-day, etc., which in the end is most of the time a your faults.Compared to the last two, the first one is the most easy to prevent and still there are too many accidents because of this (got my share too…).
JeroenParticipantOver here in France we usually hay in may or beginning of june. It rained until the first of july and then it was over: hot and windy since. Now everything is drying so fast, we cut, rake and bale within 48 hrs. It was too steep for my horse and mower and I wanted it in fast so we used tractors, but went out to get some of the bales with the horse.
Here are pics (watch the castle in the middle..):
JeroenParticipantPurchased my forecart this spring. I chose the mechanical brakes and both drums arrived with machining errors.
Can you tell me what they were? I have the impression one of my brake drums is not exactly round and therefore touches the brake band each turn the drum makes. Loosened the brake bands, but now I am to quick at the end of my pedal.
JeroenParticipantLuckily it ended well. I would like to add to the good advice that as an apprentice you should have been warned for Eddy’s behaviour. For your sake if you work someone elses animals ask for their general behaviour (pushy, laidback, spooky, sleepy, etc.) and (but you know this by now) how often they are worked, this helps you in adapting you own attitude towards the team.
JeroenParticipantWhat I don’t understand however is the lack of time related to the 9000 dollar yearly investment mentioned and a forum that doesn’t work like it should. If you pay someone to built a website and a forum he should deliver. If that is not the case in ICT-land you go back to the old situation and reflect on what to do next. Now (for the forum member) there seems to be a situation where you are asked to contribute on something that is not working like in the past. That’s a pity.
JeroenParticipantJeroen:
If you look closely in the video, the mower is actually chained to the 6×6 barn post. The horses aren’t going anywhere:). I like this system b/c it saves a lot of time not having to unhitch/hitch the horses.
George
If they spook and panic something will break, maybe the chain makes it even worse. I seriously think you should unhitch and the part in the video is a bad example for others. If you have the routine it only takes a few minutes to unhitch and you and your horses stay safe.
JeroenParticipantI agree, most forums even have several moderators, often with each their own section to moderate.
But now there has been a change to another tool with the integration of forum and website which I think the DAPnet payed for (?). After several months the forum is not working as good as the old one (technicaly) and a lot of unfinished things (if you want to have it work like the old forum). The fact that its quiet then is a shame after all the work that went into it.JeroenParticipantHi George,
Magnificent video and your team seems a real pleasure to work with.
The lunchbreak however sent shivers down my spine. Had to look twice to believe my eyes. Leaving your team without bridels or even halters attached to the mower is breaking every rule in my safety book. Please unhitch!
Jeroen
JeroenParticipantFive months later and with the new website I found it interesting to reread this discussion. Being a longtime reader I enjoyed the buzz on the forum, where since the change I find it very quiet. Is everyone on facebook now?
Technically everyone should agree the change is a step backwards. The old forum, while not modern, had the basic functionalities, while this one seems to have been put together in a hasty way. Bugs are not fixed, pictures still nog accesible, etc. Strange to see the message that we are going to have to pay to post, because of the huge resource costs, after reading two months that the forum has been online for a week…
Hope things can be fixed for the better (or maybe go back to the old forum tool) and that there will be more to read and enjoy.JeroenParticipantSame problem on android, but I think bugfixing has been postponed…
JeroenParticipantWe don’t fertilize before planting Garlic, we plant them in rich soil where the year before we fertilized. We see to it that they are well watered when there is a dry spell during the forming of the bulb.
JeroenParticipantThe one line is fantastic, you have to teach man and horse and its not easy. Have seen it a lot, but never succeeded myself. Never found a mentor.
The bells we have, but use only for carriage rides. Especially the sound of the big ones on top is great:
