Samsons foot is a lot better today. Still a little swollen but I thinks he’s gonna be fine. He’s favoring quite a bit still but I believe hell be just fine in a little while. We made a little pouch to put on his ankle with big handwarmers in it for a compress lol

Well I went and checked on Samson early this morning and his foot was still pretty bad so I called the vet and he told me to put a hot compress on his fetlock twice a day untill the beginning of the week and if he can’t put anymore weight on it by then he will come out and check it out. He is a little better about putting weight on it I noticed so that’s good. But that’s all I have for now ill update as I can. Thank you John for the good wishes. I’m sure all he did was twist it or somethin but it scared me lol

I hadn’t messed with the actual fram part of the mower for a while big horses and when I went and engaged the cutter bar (the actual bar is still off) the wheels rolled perfect lol. I guess one of those gears where it had been dry for a while soaked in that oin and freed it up all the way and now it works perfect lol. Can’t start the morning before work any better lol and to top it all off I was at my farm and I was under the barn looking for any old parts that my paw paw once had and I found 2 bars with grass boards (quite rusty) one was bent quite a bit less than the current one I’m working on, and the other was perfectly straight so I brought it home and changed the grassboard off the #7 to it and started assembling it back together. Good weekend I thought lol

Well I’ve tried to mow it with my tractor and it doesn’t turn out well lol but I will try and just progress up to the steeper sections and see but yes I am mowing with a single clydesdale belgian cross. I was just wanting some opinions/advice because I didn’t wanna do it and risk injuring my horse. I especially won’t be trying it until spring because its a horrible muddy mess. Thank you all for the responses, I was actually kinda I guess you would say embarrassed to ask lol. But thank you all so much. I’m new to all of this for the most part lol

Congratulations I only have one horse that I bought last year and it was the best decision I’ve made. Its much more peaceful and enjoyable than using my tractor. And the folks on this forum don’t get any kinder or more helpful so don’t be afraid to ask questions I haven’t been on here long but I couldn’t ask for more kindness. Good luck on your new team!

Yea I cleaned the gearbox out some when I first got it when I poured oil in it to soak and it was full of mud douber nests lol so id say that could be a culprit

Big horses I kinda misunderstood you for a second and I just went out and disengaged the cutter bar and rotated the shaft by had from the front and it rotates great so you were correct it seems like its in the ring gear now. I’m gettin ready to go to work so tomorrow ill drain the oil and check the ring gears and make sure its not bent or damaged in anyway and check the allignment. And no I don’t have millers book the only book I really have is the draft horse primer, I’ve wanted to get his book soon. I appreciate the help. I actually had a job off in billings montana this time last year to run a peice of equipment in a tunnel they were building in billings I think is where it was, at the time I worked underground in the mines and run a roof bolter.

Lol if I can figure out how to put them on here with a phone ill put some asap, I don’t have a computer at home and all I have is my cell phone. You can turn the shaft from the front but its not the easiest thing I figured it would be easier to turn by the front so I assume there’s something wrong withe the shaft. Ill try and tear it apart some more to explain exactly what I have.

Yea I didn’t mention this but I know a lot of ppl on here are against cutting the blades shorter but this mower had around a 6 foot bar, it was a hair less but anyways I cut it down to about 5 foot and assembled most of it bck minus the inner shoe for it is still stuck on the mower lol. I only have one horse tho he’s a big feller I didn’t wanna strain him too hard come mowing season. I have a clydesdale belgium cross who stands 18 hands and weighs in the 1900 to 2000 range. He’s a lil thin where he was fell off bad from the ppl I bought him from but he’s pickin up good. Do you all think he can handle it well? He’s broke quite well and he’s only 6 so he’s pretty young.

Geoff you read my mind, I was just wondering if I could sharpen those guards or if I had to replace the lol. I wrote down the oil seal dimensions that you’ve given and ill measure mine in the near future to see if there close. The gear box had no oil in it so I filled it with oil and let it soak for a day and propped the mower off the ground and when I engage the cutter bar gear or whatever the wheels are really hard to turn. I actually can’t turn them one whole turn by hand. The pitman arm isn’t on there so I know its not the blade or anything and plus the blade is removed. I’ve looked for a grease fitting going to the shaft that goes to that pitman wheel but there are none. Any way I can oil this shaft or grease it to free it up?

Ok I appreciate it. Ill try it tomorrow. I’ve always been afraid of heating cast when I have to drive something out. I took the knife section out and tore it all apart and sharpened the good teeth and replaced the others this morning and put it back together and straightened the section now its ready to put in. I need to get a couple wear plates but that’s about it for the knife.
