j-l on an average year how many calves does a big beef ranch out there lose ? it seems like out west all the ranches calve outside , well the beef is outside year around i guess . here in new york we have mostly holstein dairys , so most all the calves are born inside . then after the calve dries off and has colustrum they go outside into calf hutches . they claim the fresh air is a healthier enviroment compared to the barns.

from the replies it seems like a team can mow just about the same . i never had a chance to try a mower with a team .my friend has one that just sits there , i think i’ll try to talk him into us trying it out . its supposed to be in working order , so a little tinkering and sharpening the knives or replacing them will give me a new learning experience.

i think don is just trying to say that a log even it weighs a 100 pounds will let them know weight is back there , might tire them some and if they get squirrley and try to run away it might be easier for you to stop them.

as to trotting i think slow and easy is going to win the race for you. id say the bucking is going to go away, i think hes just frisky and maybe just trying to see what he can get away with. keep up the good work. time is going to turn the horses into something great for you….mink

carl what are your thoughts on putting the chain on the tree with the horse watching you as compare to turning it around and then hooking the chain and singletree? your horse comes around haw just as” slick as snot on a doorknob”. nice video

if your bottom stringer is close to the ground why dont you make your door frame starting right on it ? you’d just have a little step on the bottom if its close enough to the ground and you wouldnt have to worry about the door rubbing the ground in case of a little build up

i dont know alot about composting but wouldnt it make more sense to even spread a load of manure on your fields every time you figured you had a spreader full? all the amish here spread almost daily.
