Mark, Ash is to soft. I’ve used red maple cause thats what i had and it worked fine, in fact it wasn’t perfectly cured and i painted it which seemed to slow down the drying. I’ve done quite a bit of wood working over the years and I’ve been told that for proper air drying its about a year for each inch of thickness. I’ve used Red Oak and Locust, my favorite wood, for bunks as well. Locust is amazing stuff. Hard, nice color, for rot resistance makes cedar look like a paper grocery bag. The old timers say it lasts a year longer then stone in the ground.Good Luck.

miniclyde, after getting them ground driving nicely what i do is take one of my forecarts that has metal shafts and put it in their corral and feed them hay from it. Ket them bang around on it step over the shafts ect. make is so they have to step over the shafts to get hay whatever works. Then i’ll back them into to the shafts(on the ground, then lift the shafts touch their sides till their goodd with it, play all sorts of games, hitch them eventually, tie them up and stand with the cart while i do chores to keep an eye on them, then sooner or later take them for a spin though a usually start out in a team hitch with a seasoned horse. Depending on my time this could take months. Good luck

    Carl,

We have some circulating with the horse folks over there, and will drop the rest at the SFJ & mofga booths tomorrow. I think there are about 200 copies… however much change I could find. I’ll pull the bumper stickers that are up on the inside MOFGA bulletin board and put those out too.

Donn, I’ve always done square as well but this round baler makes 3×4 bales that weigh about 500-600 pounds or smaller. I was amazed at the quarter mile of windrow it would suck up. The Amish up north in maine are putting 30hp motors on them to run hydraulics and pto. One guy said his mules when pulling a Round baler knew from the weight when it was full and would stop then back up to unload.

Donn, one Amish man nearby here in Maine that i’ve talked with about mowers seemed to think that about 23 inces or so was the measurement for the distance from a straight edge layed tightly to the thick end of the push bar(threaded) and extending out so you could measure up to the small end of the push bar that goes through the frame. The push bar is the hypotenuse, the straight edge is an adjacent side, and your measuring tape the opposite side of the triangle so to speak. I checked several push bars using this method and got any where from 26′ to 21′ for the bars I had. The pattern Leon sent me was somewheres around 20″. I’d have to double check on that to be exact, but thats close.

I was looking at a push bar today thinking , why couldn’t you cut one close to the threaded end bend and, hinge it somehow and put a bolt to adjust it. Not rocket science.

Not much more hay for us this fall we’re going to graze our critters as far into the fall as the weather will permit.

Donn, this summer i picked up a small Vermeer round baler (3×4).. We did everything but bale with the horses on some distant groundd. Ever consider pulling a round baler with your forecart.?

Donn and Mark, funny you guys should bring all this up cause i’ve been going through all this myself. Lynn Millers book is a bit deceptive about the threading out to adjust the lead with the push bar. It only works to some extent. In my case it torqued the pitman plate at the fly wheel end to the point that it broke as well as causing more vibration then i wanted but the lead and register was perfect and mowed well through August 1st cut I got a pattern of a straightened push bar from Leon and mine was out to France. The pitman and knife need to be in a pretty straight line to work right. Maybe the ends of that push bar could get cut off and re welded to a braket of some sort that would allow better adjustment, and had adjustment built in It looks like mlld steel to me, bent after being milled.

Good luck, glad to hear some one else is messing with this same issue. I plan to get some bars bent for future mowers. The other thought i had was about I&J’s GD forecart? Why couldn’t they adapt a new sickle bar onto that?

Just a thought. Some one one of these days is going to come up with a newer GD mower of some sort.

    Hey Jason,

This is only “the first” year. Right? It may take some of us Yankees a few years to get down to SDAD.

Sounds like an awesome event, wish i could make it.

    Hey Joel,

Tell me what the words are that make a mower not clog in wire grass and vetch.

Had a chainsaw like that once………….wouldn’t run well until you spit and cussed at it a bit, or threatened to smash it against a tree.

    Suns a coming

    George,

A few years back an elderly women wanted to buy a working mower from me, she wanted a guarantee. I laughed. I’m not sure she knew what a wrench was. Constant tinkering is the name of the game with the old HD gear.

    George,

Vetch is tough to mow. Stub guards on the inside of the cutter bar help;a stepped knife on the outside of the knife helps,; maybe tilting your guards down helps; my horses seem to figure out where the vetch is and know to step it up a bit when they get to it; that helps. Sometimes you just got to stop and (take the mower out of gear always!!!!!!) andd unclog the bar. Setting the inner and outer height shoes tall can help. as far as the grass stick goes its about center of the grass boardd 4-5″ back from the the horn so to speak of the outer shoe. Two bolts’one anchors, the other is a pivot. Put the stick on( something smooth) and pivot it and drill some holes in an arch so as to facilitate different heights from the ground at the end of the stick. The metal grass boards you can get through Macknairs or any tractor store i’ve used as well an work well. Is the timing on your knives good?. Lead good?

    Good Luck More sun coming…….!
