Well when I got home from work today the collar had came. So I changed and tore off to the barn to see if it fit. Which then turned into let me “make sure the harness fits too”. I dont have it fully adjusted just yet, but we are getting there. I do have to say that my mare made it very enjoyable. I put a bale of hay in front of her and she stood like she has been harness thousands of times. It was GREAT especially since this was my first time actually putting a harness on a horse. To my knowlege this was her first time being harnessed. We eventually even walked around dragging a single tree on the traces. She only got excited once and that was when the two horses in the next field over were acting like idiots. But she stopped after the Whoa was given. I think she was most fascinated with the bridle bit. haha not sure she ever had one of those in either. Thank you to everyone that has given me advice and pointers to get me to this point. It is much appreciated!

That plow looks pretty big to be pulled single. I guess it could be pulled through sandy ground. But not for a decent amount of time. Reguardless it is still a nice plow.

They made one horse mowers back in the day. Usually your looking for something with a 4-5 foot bar. I am only familar with the mccormick mowers and at that by no means an expert. The #7 would be ideal with that size bar. the #9 is heavier but again it depends on your condition. A #6 wouldnt be too bad either it just has the exposed gear which gets dirty and can jam up. Other then that the only thing you have to remember when making one work for a team is the height at which it rides has to stay the same. Lynn Millers book is pretty good about explaining that.

Near horse- Here in NJ you have to obtain a pesticide applicators license. Anyone with an once of common sense would no that resistance is a possibility. Im not trying to start a fight or anything but to me these farmers you speak of are taking the cheap lazy route. Im not saying you cant use round up; however, it shouldnt be used year after year. There are plenty of other herbacides that you can alternate into a proper chemical management plan. I have my license and have sat through the training and recertification process. Every step of the way it is stressed to alternate chemicals. I understand that they were told by the companies to use there products. My point is just that they should have known better and even though it would probably cost more every few years it is worth it to properly control these things with chemical application. Just cause its “Round up Ready” corn, beans, and beets (they may even have cotton by now) does not mean other things can not be used. Just my two cents. I think the idea was a terrible idea to ever happen; however, it was a cheap option and therefore econimically very sucessful.

I am in no way a monsanto supporter. However, you can not blame them for resistance of their product. Farmers should know that if you dont change the product, the systemic attack route, and class of chemical you are bound to build a resistance. Thats like blaming auto manufacturers for accidents. People need to understand that they had a choice. Again this may make me seem pro monsanto however I am far from that. I believe they do have there place in the agriculture world but they need to have the reins pulled in every once and awhile. Im not sure all the facts but did anyone here about monsanto getting sued in france, at least thats where I think it was? If my memory serves me right they lost big time.

I would like to come to the plow clinic but my mare and I are no where near ready enough to plow. We are still at the very beginning of attempting to ground drive. I was just asking so that I would have the plow all ready and in its best condition when the time arrives. But thank you for the offer. Maybe next year if its happening then.

The wife and I are planning on attending. We have family that lives about an hour south of Claire. Im excited to go and see everything. Im not sure if anyone on here has ever been to the upper peninsula of MI but there is an island called Mackinac Island. Its a couple hours north of claire. The entire island is draft powered. Automobiles have been outlawed for a a long time. Its sounds like a neat place to spend a day or so. Just throwing it out there cause it sounds neat.

I will agree to some extent the movie wasnt upbeat. However, I think that was more his unhappiness with his current situation. He wants to farm, but didnt have the means or the experience. It is tough farming side by side with another person especially if they arent related. His situation was unique I guess. Most dont manage a farm and get sidelined by the “owner”. I guess it is kinda a big deal to me because you just dont see this kind of thing happening in NJ. The stupid comments one has to deal with when they explain what they want to do as far as farming with horses. It gets frusterating and I am sure it happens everywhere not just here. I can agree it would have been nice to see more actual ” horse farming” and not so much of the drama side. But I think the drama side is what the more reality is. Farming in NJ is awesome and I really enjoy it. That being said it is in no way a trouble free easy going way to make a living. Its nice to see the “garden state” getting a little aknowlegdement for something to do with farming.

Welcome. i have found everyone on here extremely helpful and knowledgable. Just dont be afraid to ask a question no matter how silly you may think it is. The only stupid question in an un-asked one.
